Feedback

Justin and I email back and forth as apart of our communication for this year…He gave me some awesome feedback and he was a little worried that he had hurt my feelings or was too blunt. I was more than delighted that he stepped into that role because I need it and require it! It is an awesome part of the Worldrace culture. Take a look into one of our emails to see what that means. I really encourage you all who take time to read this to try this within your own marriage, friendships, work place and home environment. It is radically changing my life! Wont you just try it out?

Email: “I just wanted to tell you that your email is exactly what we do as group…every day. AIM (Adventures in missions, the company the WR is with) calls it feedback. It is incredibly essential and beneficial. I feel like, because I have been conditioned into it, I receive it very naturally and without any hesitation/frustration/disappointment/anger/defensiveness or bitterness. It is a daily part of the Worldrace culture. There are two different types of feedback, positive and constructive. Negative feedback does not exist because the goal of feedback is to call someone out and up. It  is internationally calling someone up into who God created them to be. It is not a time to “harp” on them for something that they have done wrong. It is a time of constructive instead of destructive. It is always out of a place of love and grace and the purpose is to encourage them into a place of greatness.

There are two great methods of giving feedback… the “Oreo method” and the “OES method”. The oreo method is where you sandwich the constructive in with the positive. With this, it does not negate or degrade the constructive, but, it is easier to receive and to respond to…its in our human nature. The OES method is observation, example and suggestion. This is probably my favorite so I have a real, tangible example of what they are talking about. Feedback is not vague or surface level stuff… its like they reach deep down into your personality and pull out a characteristic. For me, this has been extremely beneficial… I want to change and I want growth… feedback helps me get there. My team and I are not the best at feedback yet.. We are still learning and developing. At first, our feedbacks were 3-4 hours long… where we went in a circle and deep detailed discussed our day… but… not really any real “feedback”.  Then, we started doing “traditional feedback”…but, it was surface level stuff and just a round of “thank yous”… ect.. But, now we are moving into something deeper and its pretty exciting. Some of the rules are though…that when you are in the receiving end of feedback, whether it is constructive or positive, the ONLY response you are allowed to give is “Thank you.” You are not allowed to discuss or defend it. You just say thank you..which, has been humbling. So, if someone says something to you that offended them…and they are sincerely trying to improve you or bring you up.. You just have to say thank you…even if they don’t know the other side of the story… there is a lot of reasons for this… but.. One big on is that you really let it soak in and use the Holy spirit for discernment. If something really bothers you… you have to wait a full 24 hours before you go to that person that was the giver of the feedback. It has been very powerful and profound.. And I think that is a lot of where my break downs came from in El Salvador because… The Lord was really pressing for me to dig into my junk and deal with it. It is a call to humility and humbleness.. And those two things lead to growth and refinement. So.. Anyway, there is a quick little insight to Worldrace culture and I bring it up because I think you did a great job of it!

My team has adopted calling feedback, “Sharpening time”… (as iron sharpens iron…) because, that is really what it is.. It is refining you to become a better and more equipped person and follower of Christ. So.. Thank you baby for loving me enough to sharpen me. I need it… and…usually constantly. Wink. So, I sincerely invite you and welcome you to that….I want this to become apart of our relationship and ESPECIALLY in our marriage. Feedback is good and Godly. Thank you for that!….”
