Hey Yall!
My name is Amy Baltensperger and I am from the blues music and BBQ city of Memphis, Tennessee! I have always lived a little on the outskirts of Memphis in a town called Millington.
I grew up in a home with two parents and five siblings. Yes, five kids in five years. So, you could say there is never a dull moment in the house. My parents always tried to teach us that family was the most important, besides God. I grew up in a Christian home where every Sunday we would fill up the back pew with all seven of us. Not only was I there on Sunday mornings, but Sunday and Wednesday nights you better believe I was at youth group. I could not have asked for a better family to grow up in.
Everyone in my family is medical except for me. My dad is a home infusion pharmacist. My mom was a nurse until she had five kids and became a stay-at-home mom. My oldest brother, Mark, is about to graduate from paramedic school and become a wonderful paramedic. Matthew, my other brother, is in Physical Therapy School and going to become a Physical Therapist. My oldest sister, Anna, is about to graduate from nursing school and work at Lebonheur. My twin, Sara, was early admitted in Pharmacy school. Then, you have a Child Development and Religion in Society major with no clue what she wants to do. The bright side of it all is that I always know I am covered if anything medical happens. Below is us all in New York after Christmas. That is just one of the many pictures you will see of them.(Which one do you think is my twin?)
I am 21 and about to graduate in May with a double major of Child Development and Religion in Society and could not be more ready. I chose those two majors because I have always loved working with children and I knew I wanted to do something with missions ever since high school.
One mission field I loved was in international missions. I had the privilege of going to Nicaragua twice in high school. The first time I went we got to teach VBS to the children and go to the barrios and feed the families. The second time, we got to go to the barrios, but we also got to go to the prison there in Managua. This was my favorite part of both trips. Seeing the people and culture in the second trip just opened my eyes for the hearts of people overseas. Ever since I went there, I have been craving to do internationally missions.
In high school, I was also involved in an organization called Young Life. This is an organization directed towards high schoolers and now middle schoolers. We go into the lunch room, go to games, do anything the kids are at and invite them to Club. At club, we sing songs, play games, fellowship with each other and the last ten minutes or so someone gives a message. We are going into the school and learning kids by their name and then teaching them the love the Lord has for them. I could go on and on about it, if you want to know just ask!
Freshman year of college, I got to serve at a Young Life camp, called Carolina Point, for a whole month. That whole summer I got to experience leaders giving themselves up for their high school friends. I also learned what it looked like to have a real vulnerable community around you loving and encouraging you. The verse that has resonated with me ever since is:
“Charm is deceitful. Beauty is vain. BUT a woman who fears the Lord will be praised.” (Proverbs 31:30)
After I came back that summer, I knew the Lord was pushing me to become a leader. I have been leading for around three years at an Urban school in the heart of Memphis. I have loved living life with theses high school girls and pointing them to the gospel.
Young Life has been a major part of my story as well as many people. I do not have enough space to even begin to make the list of people that have loved me and encouraged me throughout my life. I have been truly blessed to have a community surrounding me that not only loves me but likes me.
Lets play a game to get to know me. If you really knew me you would know:
1. I absolutely love coffee. (I think it is one of my top love languages)
2. I am a music connoisseur.
3. My number one love language is quality time.
4. I love musicals, Disney songs and Christmas music.
5. I love art. (i.e. painting, drawing, etc.)
6. I used to have a horse named Gracie.
7. In high school, I played soccer for three years.
8. I love outdoor activities like hiking, enoing, kayaking, etc.
9. I have wanted to go on the World Race for like two years before actually being able to apply.
Thanks for taking the time out to read this and I hope it brought a little insight to the world of Amy!
