1. There is one neutered cat in all of Guatemala, and he is at our ministry host’s cat.  His name is Pudding, though Anabelle insists that his name is still Anabelle. I’m pretty sure Pudding is having an identity crisis because of her.

  2. Anabelle names EVERYTHING after her.  Chelsea has a pinata named Squish, Anabelle insists that it’s Anabelle.

  3. We have ten pinatas hanging from the ceiling in our room.  Makayla thinks they are idols. They are not. Pinatas make for great mood boosters.  I smile everytime I look at them.

  4. Real talk here.  The Race will make you pray for healthy poop more than you have ever dreamed you would.  The topic of healthy poop has made it to my daily conversations with God. Y’all don’t appreciate a good and healthy poop until they’re far and few between.  Thank goodness I don’t have diarrhea anymore.

  5. When you can’t touch animals you get creative in showing love and affection to your favorite ministry dog.  Like using a broomstick to give belly rubs. Literally happened with our ministry host’s dog, Spanky. He is the biggest lovebug I’ve ever met.  He’s the only one we do this to because he is literally the sweetest dog ever.

  6. Pleather pants make for really good pants to have on the Race.  I bought some in my first month here, and water and sweat do not soak into the fabric.  It just evaporates, and doesn’t stink after. I’ve only had to wash those suckers twice.

  7. I am a fairly decent hairdresser for boys.  Haven’t done girls. I only know how to do one style, but the one style I can do really well.

  8. It really hard to do an undercut with scissors.  My clippers broke halfway through one little boy’s hair and I did fairly decent.  It looked good. At least, that’s all that matters right? Right?

  9. We witnessed a murder the other day.  Anabelle, Valeria and Hannah S brutally murdered one of our beloved pinatas, leaving us with nine.  Its decapitated head sits on our window grate as a trophy/memorial.

  10. I can’t resist hopscotch.  There’s a hopscotch grid painted on the sidewalk at Chimal on the way to our bus stop.  I always do it. Dropped my phone twice. I no longer carry it in my pocket.

  11. Chimaltenango is HUGE.  So there’s a central city, referred to as chimal, but there are smaller towns surrounding, that are still a part of Chimal.  The Base is in Chimal, even though we have to take a 30 min ride to the central part of Chimal, Parramos is Chimal, Bola de Oro, our ministry village, is Chimal.  Chimaltenango is massive.

  12. There was an earthquake at ministry one day.  We never even felt it. Our ministry hosts, Josefina and Brayan told us that it just happened.  It was pretty much the biggest letdown of my life. I was expecting more.

  13. Saw a volcano erupt!  It was so cool, and minor, thankfully.  That’s all I wanted to see. It was Fuego, the name of the volcano, that I saw.

  14. I hiked Pacaya and roasted marshmallows over molten lava.  The entire top of the mountain was charred and black, and you could see the heat rising from the ground.  You can’t touch the white rocks, they are hot. And the rocks sound hollow when you walk on it, and the rocks are shiny black from all the metal in them.

  15. I am slightly obsessed with Choco Bananos and Helados Locos.  Choco Bananos are frozen bananas dipped in chocolate, and Helados Locos are frozen pineapple popsicles that you dip in lime and spices.  It’s so good!
