So I’ve realized that most of my blogs and stories so far have been from adventure days or experiences outside of ministry itself. Which is such a small part of our World Race experience… I began to wonder why?

Real Talk:

For me it’s been easier to process those handful of stories on days when we are just relaxing. They seem more isolated and easier to share. Ministry can be really hard to process and it’s a challenge to put my experiences into words that accurately communicate what I see here. Ministry is also what we’re living 90% of the time which makes it another level of hard to explain.

Ministry is just life-How do you begin to share all of that?

I’ll at least try (:

(also, I’m always SO WILLING to answer questions and am better at addressing stuff that people want to hear about so PLEASE send me your questions so I can interact in that way with you guys!!)

This month we have worked with His Hands for Honduras. The kids get breakfast at Esperanza’s house and sing some Jesus songs with us. Then we go a few doors down to the church to do a Bible story with the kids (which involves a skit that the kids participate in) and then play with them until the pastor tells us it’s time to go back to his house.

Especially this month, ministry has been a real eye-opener. The children we work with only get a few meals a week (many from the program) and it’s noticeable. They arrive in the same clothes every day, some I have never seen wear a pair of shoes. There are children who don’t interact (or barely) and we know it is because of a lack of development because of malnutrition.

All that being said, there’s so much joy in the kids that we work with. They are just like any other kids looking for love and acceptance, some of them more reserved, some bursting with energy and there’s always a ‘class clown’.

My frisbee has come in handy again this month and I play with the older boys and each day when we show up I am bombarded with them asking, ‘platano?’ (I’m pretty sure because I initially described the frisbee as a plate that you throw… Hindsight-probably not the best comparison).

I race the kids up the ginormous hill that is the road that Esperanza’s house and the church are on (I have yet to be beaten for the record) countless times a day, which is wonderful World Race exercise.

(This pic does not do the hill justice, it is NO JOKE, all the steepness!!)

That’s also grown into ALL THE ‘Attuto’s'(sp?) which are piggy back rides. Another wonderful form of exercise especially when you take on the older kids and all they want to do is go up the hill (I can’t tell you how many times each morning “MAS RAPIDO” is screamed way louder than necessary based on the proximity of the kids mouth to my ear)! My teammates have even begun to claim that my ‘natural state’ is running around with a child on my back.

I’d encourage you to check out my teammates blogs on ministry this month if you want more details about ministry because they’ve had some really awesome stuff to say and they’ve put many of my thoughts into words!!
