If you would of asked me as a kid what kind of family I wanted, I would of said I wanted a mother, a father, and two siblings. I didn’t want several parents, A LOT of brothers and sisters, or to live in so many houses, but I grew up in fosters home for most of my life.
Now if you asked me, If I wanted the family I have now I would tell you, “Yes, they are my family. They are my sisters , brothers, aunts, mom and dad.”
I learned at a young age that family isn’t always blood family. Family is the people who care for you, love you, and show you compassion and forgiveness and are there even when you don’t want them to. They are your cheerleaders when you need someone to cheer you on. They are also the ones who give you a shoulder to cry on and give you the strength to walk when you don’t think you can. Family is something so special and sweet and something you should really cherish.
I now have my Mom and Dad. I have LOTS Of sisters, brothers, aunts and cousins. I am really blessed. They are my people and no, I didn’t get them like I thought I would. I actually locked myself in a closet one time because I didn’t want the Mom that foster care gave me. I would never trade them in So I thought.
“Don’t worry family. I’m only trading you for 11 months.” No I have never met any of the people I’m trading you in for but I have gotten the chance to know them. They are silly, Coffee Drinkers, Tea drinkers, Children Ministers, Athletes, Hard workers, Artsy, Silly, Prayer Warriors, Dog Lovers, Lovers of Awesome Music.
They encourage me so much and remind me daily that I’m not alone on this adventure. I can’t wait to travel the world with them. I am so glad God has called them to be my people as I am called to be their people. Don’t worry, they will probably drive me crazy and get on my nerves too, and have random dance parties with me.
I ask that you would start praying for this new family as we embark on this adventure in the coming months. Pray for them as they trade in their family and friends. Pray as we trust God to lead us into the unknown, as we go as we are and share the love of God. As Scary as it is to trade in my family for 11 months, I know that I can’t wait to see how God use me to further his kingdom, to plant seeds and to show his love to everyone I encounter.
