My squad and I have been spending the past week in Nairobi, Kenya debriefing with our leaders and coaches. Tomorrow we will drive from Nairobi to Arusha, Tanzania where my team will spend the month of March. I don’t know any details on ministry yet or what to expect. As I move into the next month, I'm looking at my remaining time on the field as a new “3-month Race”. I’ve learned lesson after lesson concerning community, identity, and kingdom reality. When I stated those words in the past, they were only far-fetched concepts. But now they have been filled with color; the Race has brought these words to life. I'm really excited to take what I have learned and experienced my first 8 months on the field and finish the Race with a greater understanding of my identity as a daughter of the King and of the absolute reality that the Kingdom of God is here, invading the Earth. Blogs are coming to share more about all I learned in Massai land. Even debrief has been super busy, but hopefully I will have time to catch you up soon before more lessons and stories pile on.
Here is a quick photo recap of my past month in Massai Mara, Kenya. Enjoy!
Our main ministry was at Mara Shiners Academy where I taught “Standard One” class. I helped teach English, Math, Kiswahili (yes, a language I cannot speak), Science, and CRE (Christian Religious Education) to students ages 5-10. Here are some pictures of the school, my teachers, and the students. One day we took a break from studying and I showed the movie “The Lion King” to the class. They LOVED it! Most of them have never seen a computer or a movie, so this was a very special treat! They loved hearing some Kiswahili words throughout the film such as Simba (Lion), Rafiki (Friend), and Hakuna Matata (No Worries).
We also visited local Massai villages and shared the gospel with the communities there. One of the groups was a nomadic Massai tribe so we had only a couple hours to share before they took their cattle to the next water source! The day before we left, I was able to meet with a group of Massai women and tell them about the love their Father has for them. Sharing the gospel and meeting with the local people is definitely one of my favorite ministries on the Race!
I spent one day working at the health clinic, weighing and registering newborns and filling out paperwork for immunizations. The clinic provides free immunizations for infants on Tuesdays, so we would send several team members every week to help out with the demand.
