Hello friends! My squad and I have been here in Costa Rica for about two weeks, and I’m already in love with this place. It is nothing like I expected it to be, but in the best way imaginable. The people are warm and welcoming, the culture is very laid back, and the weather is so nice that I never want to go back to Arizona (sorry mom).
Day-to-day life in Costa Rica usually includes waking up early enough to see the sunrise, having morning devotionals, cooking a team breakfast, and catching a bus into downtown San Jose for ministry. Depending on which ministries we’re helping at, we can get back home at lunchtime or mid afternoon. It ranges dramatically, ranging at 7:30am-12:30pm, 7pm-12am, or even 8:30am-4pm (I’ll explain more about my team’s ministries in the next blog). The sun sets here at 6pm year-round, so everyone goes to bed super early.
Even when we’re at the base, we don’t have a lot of free time. Most of our time at home we’re either cooking, cleaning, hand washing our laundry, or spending structured time with our teams. When we actually do have free time it’s usually spent napping in hammocks, learning to play the guitar, kicking the soccer ball/throwing the football, walking to Starbucks, McDonald’s, and Walmart, or playing random games like trying to pick up a cup without using your hands and only on one foot.
Even though my squad and I have only been living together for 12 days, everyone is already super close. We all share clothes, snacks, bunk beds, and pints of ice cream from the Fresh market down the street. We also have weekly worship sessions and random team tournaments. Last week our whole squad played a game called Pass the Pigs (just look it up), and this week we’re trying to put together a spoons tournament.
It’s still hard top believe I’m actually here, and I look forward to sharing all of my experiences with y’all!
