KENYAAAAAAAAAAAA.
Well, I'm finally in AFRICA. I've only been waiting for this moment for my entire life.
But really, this place is amazing.
My team is living in the slums of Nairobi. We're partnering with a school and also working at the health clinic across the street from our house.
The first two weeks, we taught bible lessons in the school and answered all of the kids questions about all sorts of things. These questions ranged from "Do you have any pets?" to "How is the United States so good at the Olympics?" to "What is puberty?" Needless to say, visiting the different classes always kept us on our toes. The school system here is 3 months in class, and a 1 month break. So now, we are teaching Vacation Bible School! It's been so much fun to sing songs, play games, and teach the Bible to the kids!
When we aren't working at the school, we are spending time in the clinic. The clinic births about 100 babies a month! Many of us have gotten to see a baby delivered. We've also gotten the opportunity to work in the lab, performing tests on the blood and urine samples. Although the baby delivery and the lab work is awesome, I tend to hang out in the waiting room, meeting and talking with the women there, and escaping all the blood and gross things that go along with hospitals. Unlike in the States, women don't mind letting complete strangers hold their infant children, so I've loved getting to hold the babies and pray over their lives.
The need for Jesus here is immense. Just walking down the street, you can meet multiple girls who have been abused in some way, several people who are infected with HIV/AIDS, people who regularly turn to drugs and alcohol to attempt to escape from the worlds they live in, children who are starving, people who have crippling illnesses, people who are bound by the chains of sin, people who have no life in their souls, and no hope. As I look into their eyes, I can feel the gravity of their need for a Savior.
So, please pray for these beautiful people. Pray for renewed vision and energy for the permanent missionaries here. Pray that chains would be broken and that the Lord would be glorified in this slum!
