Since we’ve been in Nelspruit, South Africa we’ve been working with Michael and Lynn Laubscher. They are awesome servants of the Lord and one of the projects they’re involved with is empowering locals who have great visions but limited resources achieve their aims. One of these is a preschool started by a woman who cares for over 150 kids out of her
house. Obviously the facilities were very limited for the number of kids and so Michael and Lynn acquired some funds to add on to her building. One of the rooms they added on in the past was very dark and had some not so great murals painted on the wall, so Lynn enlisted us to be creative and turn it into something a little nicer for the kids. Here’s a pictoral step by step of the process–it was a blast!
These are the before pictures….a funny looking Mickey Mouse (who the kids don’t even know!), random flowers and birds, a grinning chinese man and an indian smoking a peace pipe…yikes.
Shawna’s starting to paint over the castle, Linnea thought she’d try on the cloth we bought for spills (she’s so hot in it don’t you agree?), and I just had to pose with the Chinese man who is plainly visible through the first coat of paint.
Bob Ross, get out the way! …you’ve got nothing on my painting skills! Here I am with my elephant and the kudu poking out from behind the door.
Shawna and I are in progress putting on final touches and Steph creates an African tree with style.
And now…dun…dun…DUNN…the AFTER pictures:
This is me standing in the place of the Chinese man…I look just like him don’t I? And how about my little African village and the olifant…pretty sweet! (p.s. Olifant is the Afrikans way to say elephant…I do know how to spell.thankyou.)
These are the amazing creatures we’ve created! Tana with her Blue Crane, the South African National bird, and Shawna with her Giraffe sunset. dig it.
I don’t know about you, but I think I look pretty hot with ears and horns…I think it might just be my new ‘do!
Linnea cuddles up with the Kudu and hugs the South African Book of the Road which was the inspiration for all of this!
A full two day’s work and the room is finally done! It was a little ironic that we went on a safari to Kruger National park the day after we finished–gosh, I love Africa! Here we are with the finished wall. YAY!
