First, Merry early Christmas to everyone!!! We will be celebrating in the village with a nice meal – goat- and some special treats we’re going to try and cook up over our fire ☺
Squatty potties have even smaller holes in Africa than in Europe.
Podcast sermons can really get you crazy in the head.. in a good way, and the heart. Check out Austin Stone, or First Assemblies of God Gainesville, or Francis Chan.
One of my most favorite evenings was driving back in from our trip to Lilongwe and God painted the sky with a huge sunset of bright pink and oranges that seemed endless over the huge open fields we were driving through. It then later turned into the brightest full moon I’ve seen.Carrying water on your head really is a lot easier than any other way.Dear Bananarchy, I miss you.
I never realized how much I appreciate furniture, till I had none.
A good afternoon in the village: reading, getting a fire started in record timing to cook that’s hot enough to boil water, watching our guys chase the kids from our front porch up trees, walking and picking mangoes.
My teammates take good care of me: Sarah wakes me up with techno music.. and dance moves, Bethsaida feeds me, JBuns sings and carries my to go box, Cinthia will scratch my back and bring mindazi, Derek carried his little red chair everywhere and let me sit in it every time we stopped moving when I was sick and even helps me clean my tent when I leave it waded up for 2 weeks after it rained, and James keeps me (and everyone) hydrated and always helps start the fires to cook 🙂
I like to pretend my mosquito net is like a princess canopy… we all do.
Never brush your teeth at night with your headlamp on unless you moths and bugs to fly at your face :/
Sometimes I think planet earth should come visit world racers… or Bear, we found a tarantula, snake, and chameleon, all in a 2 day span.
I never thought that I would drink coffee or eat tomatoes or cucumbers so willingly.
Jon (JBuns as we lovinly call him), our married team leader, loves the ladies of the A Team so much he will walk around our house to close our windows because we are too lazy to get out of bed and we don’t want bugs in our room… while singing Beyonce “Single Ladies.” ☺
The largest bill in Malawi is the 500 Kwacha…worth about 3 UDS… that means it takes A LOT of Kwacha to pay for things such as bus tickets and housing… KwachaKwachaKwacha… It also takes 151 Kwacha single coins (bigger than a quarter) to equal 1 USD.
Sometimes, or really all the time, I think God has the world laid out as one huge puzzle. We are all pieces he is putting together and making a huge magnificent picture out of. And you never know where your piece fits in. And it pretty much rocks my world when I see the pieces coming together and glimpses of the grand picture.
We have found a star that twinkles so much it almost looks like it turns red, white, and blue…we call it the Obama star.
We have some grizzly men on our squad who are not shaving for a year.,. whoa! And women for that matter.
If you eat eggs and rice for two weeks straight, by week three, they will make you gag at the thought.
In Mzuzu, I knew it would be a good day when church turned into a dance party…and dance circle on the stage… all are welcomed!
There is sweet bread called the Obama, and a thicker bread pastry called Bin Laden.
Pulling up to the Mabuya Camp feels like we are heading home… I’m pretty sure I took the longest shower ever.
We have found a bus company that will only take about 30 or so hours to get from Malawi to South Africa…it took us 67 to get here… God was teaching us something for sure!
Romans 8. Still blows my mind. Glory is happening always (read a couple posts back)
Our squad raised $12,000, in one week! Praise God! Still have a way to go, but holy cow…
If you order a milkshake in Africa, it may come out more like chocolate milk. Sometimes if a restaurant runs out of something, such as cheese, they will send someone home to bring more cheese… thus be one reason for a 2 hour wait for pizza.Somehow it is now normal for 67 people to be in the back of a flatbed trailer truck…and doesn’t even phase us when you are in a minibus and a small man about 4.5 ft tall hides himself under your seat to get through a security check point. TIA.
I’m still amazed that I went to the hospital (stomach bug.. all better now), saw a doctor, and got medicine all for 10 USD! Granted, the services are a bit different than in the states, but hey, 10 dollars?? Sweet. Praise God for all the work he is doing in Africa, all the adventures, and how he is bringing his Kingdom here, everyday.
