There are few times where I have ever felt so humbled.

Early in the morning, we boarded a public bus (along with 300 locals) heading to a nearby city to visit Home of Joy, a ministry we learned about through YWAM. Home of Joy is a support group for individuals with HIV. One day we were given an opportunity to visit and fellowship with these incredible people.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infects vital cells in the immune system, causing the body to become more susceptible to infection. This virus also causes AIDS. If left untreated, survival time with HIV ranges from nine to eleven years.

Peter, our YWAM contact, called HIV ministry a "last minute" ministry, typically being called to the hospital at the last moments of one's life. The government in Myanmar provides no preventative care. Because the only government assistance takes place in hospitals, families usually drop off their affected member so that they do not have to worry about or pay for treatment and costs associated with death. Oftentimes, the family doesn't step forward to claim the body of the deceased so that the hospital can take care of it. These victims are disposed of with no ceremony or identification.

For the individuals at Home of Joy, the future looks bleak. But during our time with them, instead of seeing negativity and pessimism, I came face to face with resilience and hope.

The men and women from Home of Joy shared testimony after testimony of their struggles and their redemption. Among the many stories, one theme remained: faith.

This woman shared this powerful verse:

(Jesus speaking about Lazarus)
"This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it."

– John 11:4

She followed up by saying she is afflicted for the glory of God. Wow. Really? If I were in her shoes, I would be asking Him why this was happening rather than giving Him praise.

This widow and mother of two, who is currently unemployed said, " the Bible is God's promise to us." So she asks God to give her and her children their daily bread. He remains faithful to His promise to do so. Never have I wondered if I was going to spend a day without food. I've never been lacking in this regard. Her faith is incredible.

This is but a glimpse of their stories. I will be forever humbled by my visit to Home of Joy. Humans hold a resilient spirit, but it is so amplified by our faith.

The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.
Psalm 9:9-10
