Cambodia

  • It is bordered by Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam.
  • Phnom Penh is the capital.
  • It is slightly smaller than Oklahoma.
  • 90% of Cambodians are Khmer, while 5% are Vietnamese, 1% are Chinese, and 4% are considered different ethnic groups.
  • The official language is Khmer and is spoken by 97% of Cambodians.
  • The official religion is Buddhism.  Only 2% are Muslim and less than 1% (0.4% to be more specific) of the population is Christian.
  • The population is 15,458,332. 
  • To put the percentage of Christians into perspective, that means that only around 62,000 people in Cambodia are Christian.
  • Approximately 92% of the population is under the age of 54.
  • The median age is 24.
  • 29% of the child population is underweight.
  • As of the 2001 estimate, 39% of the child population between the ages of 5 and 14 was involved in some form of child labor.  That is approximately 1.5 million children.
  • Cambodia is a major source of human trafficking, both labor and sex trafficking.  
  • Over 30 years ago, at least 1.5 million Cambodians did under the Khmer Rouge regime at the hands of Pol Pot.  They are still recovering today.
  • It is home to Angkor Wat, a Hindu temple and monastery build during the Khmer empire in the 12th century.  It is now a Buddhist complex.
