Have you ever heard that song? I have sang it for years and it has always been one of my favorites.
I never really understood the depth of it until this past year.
The third verse says, “and on that day when my strength is failing, the end draws near, and my time has come.”
Last year I stopped singing that part. It was too hard. I know what that looks like, it is seared into my brain forever. I know what a last breath sounds like. I know what it feels like to be the one still here.
I still loved the song. I would sing almost the whole thing. But on the third verse I couldn’t sing, because I couldn’t stop the tears. Without fail those lines have brought me to tears for more than a year.
Then the other morning while we were worshipping our host, John, started playing 10,000 Reasons. I was mentally prepared. Or I thought I was. This time as we were singing the first verse I lost it. God’s timing is a funny thing. Maybe He knew I was just now ready for this. The first verse says, “the sun comes up, it’s a new day dawning, it’s time to sing your song again, whatever may pass and whatever lies before me, let me be singing when the evening comes…”
All the times I could not sing about that day. I already had. On that day, a new day dawned, and God was there. He knew what was going to come to pass. And He was there. And when the evening came He was still there. Still my rock, my foundation, and my all in all.
While I never doubted that He was there. The truth of this song hit me with so much force. God is good every morning. And, God is good every night, no matter what comes to pass during the day.
“10,000 Reasons (Bless The Lord)”
[Chorus]
Bless the Lord, O my soul
O my soul
Worship His holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I’ll worship Your holy name
The sun comes up, it’s a new day dawning
It’s time to sing Your song again
Whatever may pass, and whatever lies before me
Let me be singing when the evening comes
[Chorus]
Bless the Lord, O my soul
O my soul
Worship His holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I’ll worship Your holy name
You’re rich in love, and You’re slow to anger
Your name is great, and Your heart is kind
For all Your goodness I will keep on singing
Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find
[Chorus]
Bless the Lord, O my soul
O my soul
Worship His holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I’ll worship Your holy name
And on that day when my strength is failing
The end draws near and my time has come
Still my soul will sing Your praise unending
Ten thousand years and then forevermore
[Chorus x2]
Bless the Lord, O my soul
O my soul
Worship His holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I’ll worship Your holy name
Jesus, I’ll worship Your holy name
Lord, I’ll worship Your holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I’ll worship Your holy name
Jesus, I’ll worship Your holy name
I’ll worship Your holy name
