Ode to N Squad

who were we, who are we now
the question of the year, or even our lifetime
we’ve been broken down, raised up, broken again; left confused
questions of our faith, our existence, our purpose haunted us
dreams were prophetic, then nightmarish
we’ve seen poverty, death, heartache, sadness, hopelessness; and
also hope, life, love, healing, and Jesus
we’ve been amidst exploding bombs and in silent jungles
we’ve suffered sicknesses and hurt; and in our strength have built
things that will last and serve people when we are gone
we’ve fought with ourselves, with God, with each other
resisted change, then prayed for it desperately
we’ve been on our knees in tears then danced in the pouring rain
with arms outstretched to the heavens
our fears have crippled us, even hindered serving
they’ve destroyed relationships, hurt loved ones
our faith has brought hope, changed lives,
revealed our spiritual gifts and strengths
we’ve worshiped God with a fierce passion
and then ignored him defiantly
we’ve walked in freedoms and accepted change
destinies have been revealed, truths told
we’ve held orphans, preached the gospel, prayed healing,
provided a compassionate ear, a shoulder to lean on
our feet have walked many roads, our eyes have seen
this world as it is, the darkness and the light
we’ve heard the stories of the forgotten voices
witnessed the suffering and the loss
we’ve been to many places, seen many faces

this race ends in November
what we’ve learned will stay with us
what are we going to do about it now
it doesn’t end here, the world doesn’t stop
the sun will go down and rise again
your purpose will still be there
our destinies continue, do we continue
with them….is this where the real race begins
some say we are even more a mess now then
before we began this journey
but maybe living for Christ means
being out of control, being a mess
it’s simple, it’s radical, it’s against
everything society teaches us
it’s who we choose to be now

that is important
