We drove down the dark road after a night of ministry….an amazing night. We had held two services, at two locations, for the Indonesians living in the Jungle. Dinner was at an Indian families home, who requested our prayers over them for health and other things. The prayer was intense and before we knew it people seemed to be lined up out the door for prayer. Requests for healing from aches and pains, asthma, etc.; a woman who couldn’t get pregnant, children in school, people needing direction, and much more. We topped off our stay with a Jesus dance party to some rockin’ Indian Christian music, classic for us wherever we go.
Now the highway stretched ahead, as we drove to where we were to stay for the evening. However…….we never reached this destination. Not long into our drive, we came across a roadblock, something we had been warned about before.
As our white van approached, I had this feeling that they wouldn’t let us pass……most of the other cars were being waved through, without a second glance. Most of the other cars were driven by Muslims. Most of the others didn’t stand out as much. The policemen shined their flashlights in our van, they weren’t smiling, their eyes looked angry. We were told to pull over. They approached the driver’s window, where one of our contact’s sat. Then began the heated talking, the arguing, the lecturing……the demand for our passports.
Not a problem right…….well some of the passengers didn’t have their passports on them. This didn’t make the police officer to happy……he took the one’s that we did have and walked away, to their post. At this point our contact was out of the van along with the other contacts, who had been behind us in another van. Various officers would periodically come to the open van windows, to question us.
One important thing to know is the police force in this country is very corrupt…..they also accept money bribes. Our contacts don’t believe in supporting this corruption, so didn’t buy into it. It amazed me how angry two of the cops were getting over this simple issue, while others were just laughing. Were they angry because we were Westerners? Because our contact had told them we were coming from church? Did they see light in us? Did the others laugh to make fun of our position? Was this all one big joke?
At one point the main officer came back to the van, shining the flashlight in on us and then into the woods. We think he was trying to eavesdrop or see if we had thrown anything out of the van. So, what do you do in this situation…..when all you can do is watch and try not allow your temper to rise? Well, number one thing is, of course, prayer (which we did seriously)…….and, being the crazy girls we are: we video taped the whole thing (stay tuned for it). We didn’t know if their intention was to just intimidate us, to get money, or to take us to jail……we really didn’t care either way. We trusted God and just put on His mighty armor.
Finally, after close to a half hour the decision was made. He came back and lectured us, told us we had to turn around and return home, etc. etc. I don’t really remember much of what he lectured on. I just remember saying: “Yes Sir” over and over. So, we turned the van around, opened the windows and started singing praise songs to Jesus very loudly. Driving a couple miles ahead, out of site, we pulled over to transfer some ministry stuff to the other van. The other van was going back through the roadblock, where we were supposed to go.
Our contact told us that the police force would make sure we did indeed go back to our house. They had contacts, and would call ahead to watch us. We saw various pulled over cops, motorcycles, etc. It felt like eyes of darkness were on us the whole trip home……but that’s okay, because the almighty eyes of Light out shone them.
The evening turned out to be a Victory in so many different ways. We brought joy and prayers to a household/community, we spoke the Truth to some of the broken, and then we trusted God through an intense situation.
