In Vietnam, the power tends to go out about once a week. Generally after it rains pretty hard. The first time it happened for about 30 hours, the following week it happened for only 4 hours. These times were actually really good for our team. We were able to come together and come up with creative solutions that we wouldn’t have happened otherwise. Definitely a bonding experience. The cheer when it came back on was so loud. So if you ever find yourself in need to amuse yourself for 30 hours without power, I’ve graciously made a list for you. I hope you enjoy!
What to do during 30 hours without power:
- Play cards
- Help with dinner
- Wash dishes
- Teach kids English by candlelight
- Spend quality time talking with a teammate
- Read the Bible
- Nap
- Play guitar
- Sunbathe to tan your calves and shoulders that haven’t seen the light in 2 months
- Read a book
- Pray
- Read the Bible again
- Sleep
- Go get iced coffee
- Walk around
- Eat a candlelit dinner
- Have a dance party by headlamp
- Read the Bible another time
- Go buy fruit
- Have long, in-depth conversations with your whole team
- Try to learn a new game
- Fail at learning new game because you don’t have the right stuff
- Read the Bible once more
- Go for a run
- Take a shower
- Eat goldfish
- Enjoy and be flexible!
