I
think my favorite part of being a leader so far has been seeing the reactions
of my team when they experience something they’ve never seen or done before.
They
just get so excited about the smallest things, things that have become normal
to me.
I
tend to forget that not many people have traveled the world and seen the things
that I have.
I
forget that they have never experienced an African bus ride or eaten mass
amounts of rice every day for months.
I
forget that it’s not normal to live out of a backpack or wear the same clothes
10 days in a row.
The
past two days have been full of new experiences for my team, and I love seeing
how they respond to them.
They
get so excited about seeing little Kenyan babies and so NOT excited about not
being able to shower for the next two weeks.
It
reminds me of how I was at their age when I stepped off the plane into a land
full of dusty red dirt and beautiful mahogany coloured people.
It
reminds me of how I felt when I saw the brokeness and the joy.
They
are seeing everything with fresh eyes and open hearts.
And
it reminds me that I need to do the same.
Even
though I have traveled the world and been to Africa many times before,
my
team is teaching me to see with fresh eyes.
To
experience everything with a ready and open heart.
We
are heading out today to go to a Masaai tribe about two hours from Kijabe.
We
won’t have access to showers or other such comforts…
haha.
I
can’t wait.
