I just got really hard news about some friends on the World Race. The January 08 team has been in Africa for a couple months now and is about to leave for India this weekend.
A couple days ago, they were all robbed at gun point in a hostel that they were staying at in Johannesburg, South Africa. Although terribly traumatic (the ordeal lasted about 20 minutes), no one was physically hurt– praise the Lord! But they had tons of stuff taken including passports, electronics (laptops, iPods…), sleeping bags, Bibles, journals, etc.
They seem to have a great perspective on it–that those things are all just earthly processions and not of eternal value, but I can only imagine how hard it would be to do what they do without the basic living necessities of the Word, somewhere to sleep, and something to record their thoughts on…
My team is sending a monetary donation with an AIM staff member that is meeting them in India so they can start to replace some of the necessities. While our initial thought was to send them all of the gear that our team used, it would cost more to ship it than it would to just buy new stuff overseas (oh, the joys of international postage!).
