(I am in Tanzania right now and just got out of the bush so I’m a little behind on the blogging, forgive me and for now just enjoy what happened 4 weeks ago!)

This month was in many ways opposite of our stay in Kenya. Instead of living with a family and always being on Church grounds we were blessed with a beautiful house about 20 minutes walk from the church that was high atop a mountain overlooking Lake Victoria. I wasn’t necessarily excited about Uganda and my mindset was pretty much “another African country”. All I had really heard about Uganda was that it was like Kenya but poorer and that Kampala was a horrible city. While I am beginning to believe that there is no such thing as a nice big African city (the villages are the way to go), I must say that I favored Kampala over Nairobi as long as you didn’t get stuck in traffic. Anyways, back to what this blog is about. One huge thing God has taught me about himself this year is that there is no formula to how He works. Methodology is something a lot of individuals and churches fall into and it really quenches the Spirit. As humans we just like to think that if we have something under control it is also under God. This usually is not the case. In fact, it is so refreshing to realize that a lot of times when things seem out of control is usually when God shows up.

So you may be thinking, “Allan, why are you writing a 6 step formula for a revival if there is no sure formula for how God works?” Well first of all it’s just more fun for all you readers out there. And second of all, while you don’t just mechanically follow formulas, you can learn from others’ experiences. So without further ado…

1.     1. Preprayeration

A lot of times this race God has shown that you get what you pray for. In Kenya we began to pray that in the next month we would have more time to spend together as a group and with alone time with God. This month God answered this prayer in amazing ways, and gave us a house to ourselves and space and time to give to him and pour into what he wanted for us. Though we didn’t know it, it is exactly what we needed. We got to spend time in prayer long enough to actually hear what God had to say instead of just asking him to bless what we were going to do. It seems that when God does something it never begins when it “starts”, but before in prayer and preparation long before you see the fruit.

2.        2. Assess the Needs

On the first day that the Pastor talked to us he shared with us his heart that his congregation was about to go through revival and that we were the ones to help start it. We all were pretty excited about this and knew that this was what God was preparing us for. The Pastor was so gracious in allowing us to give our input in what we thought God wanted for the congregation. After the first couple days of evangelizing door-to-door, we really felt that God wanted us to pour into the believers in the church instead of reaching out for new ones. Galatians 6:10 continued to come to my mind “So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of faith”. Pastor then started organizing visits to the members instead of other people in the village. It was so refreshing to focus on encouragement of fellow believers, taking some time to water the existing plants instead of sowing new seeds.

3.       3. Repray

One mistake that I have made this year is praying and then holding on to God’s first answer. I think I have missed out on a lot by not bringing things back up to God. This month we didn’t settle and we wanted more of God because he is big enough to give it. Visiting the members wasn’t enough and God showed us that one thing missing in the church was the Word of God. Other than the pastors, not many of the members had access to God’s Word and didn’t have the money or means to buy it. This became our main focus as we believed that if we could let loose the Word of God, freedom would also be released in the city.

   4. Realize there are No Easy Steps to Start a Revival

I can’t really tell you when this step became a reality but it was somewhere after step one and before step 6. It’s when you get to the point where you are like “God, why don’t you just open up these people’s eyes and show them who you are!” This is a great place to be in because it either causes you to give up or give more. Giving up ,many times just shows that you weren’t in it in the first place, and giving more shows that you rely on God to get through it. It is always nice to read about the awesome things that God does in blogs or books but I forget that sometimes it’s just plain hard work.

5.      5. Just Do It

We started praying that God would provide Bibles for the church community and that we would not have to pay for them out of pocket. Not just because we didn’t have the money to do it, but also because we wanted to show the people that it was a gift from God not just us. Ginger had previously made some calendars for support raising for her trip and contacted a friend about giving the rest of those out for donations for Bibles. Sure enough less than one week after we prayed, we had more than enough money to buy over 40 Lugandan and English Bibles for the congregation. The rest of our time there we got to personally hand out God’s Word to his people and explain what power was behind it and our vision for their future.

6.      6. Empower

Every country I do ministry in I become increasingly more aware that I really can’t leave a lot of long lasting affects somewhere in just one month without workers of the harvest in their area. We were blessed to serve alongside a humble group of pastors that really wanted to see God work. Sometimes it has been hard this year to get over the fact that just because we are white missionaries doesn’t mean that we can bring something that others can’t. While we may have physical means such as books, degrees or experiences, the Holy Spirit works sometimes because of these things but many times in spite of them. We were honored to leave these men with the authority that Jesus left his disciples by having a service devoted to feet washing and praying for them. Service has taken a new meaning since being in Africa and it was a blessing to gratefully remind them of this.

It has been rare this year to meet ministries and actually be able to make a plan, stick to it and see God work through, all the while knowing it was beneficial to the community. It was such a blessing from God.

Thanks o Greg Houghton and Ginger Larson for some of these great pics!
