Ukrainian food or at least Ukrainian camp food is somewhat straight forward. I can tell you there will always be bread at every meal. I guess they go through 150 loaves of bread. Let’s get this straight, that is almost a loaf of bread per person. There will be butter on every dish we eat. I have made it a game on how I can avoid eating butter. Or formulate a strategy to get around it. I am not kidding when I say they eat butter on their butter. It is like 2 tablespoons per piece of bread. yikes!
The little carb looking thing that looks like pizza when you are really hungry is not pizza it is some bake dish with goat cheese (tastes like rotten cheese) and almost made half of us well loose our cookies. Also I fell for the bait in switch when they covered this bake thing with chocolate. I was so excited took a bite and almost cried. (not really, but it was super disappointing, but God is good cause He made it up to me as we had an ice cream social later)
Most mornings we get some sort of warm milk with butter and maybe a carb in it like rice or buck wheat or corn. Oh yeah almost forgot the morning we got warm milk in a bowl with butter. Our bread in the morning sometimes comes with a stack of butter a slimy salami thing and possibly some cheese. Some times the protein comes in the form of a little “pop up or weenie ” form of bologna. A pop up is one of those things kids play with on tables that you flip inside out and it pops up in the air when the suction breaks.
Mashed potatoes now I can’t say anything remotely negative because that has been the one thing I can look forward to at lunch. They are good and I’m sure made with lots of butter. Lunch also has a soup which usually is pretty good. And the famous Compote (not sure how that is spelled) but I like to call it compost it is like a bad form of apple juice. It is seriously the worst thing ever. It smells like bonfire and tastes like it too.
The best thing about Ukrainians is they like Ice Cream. I mean really like it. So we at least agree on that. Other than that food is not meant to taste good here it is more to be sure you get the right amounts of each food group. And I guarantee you they have the fat portion covered.
I love Ukraine!
