Team Dunamis spent the most amazing month living in the mountains of Peru. This month was the hardest thus far, in terms of living conditions. The first night all of us girls (5 of us) slept side by side on the ground in a room that was about 8 by 9 feet. I woke up with a worm…on my face. So I decided to put my tent up outside, which Allie and I shared all month. Lets just say that we didn’t shower much this month, or change or clothes that much. Oh, life on the world race! Most of the month was spent working at a school by the house we were staying at and another one down the mountain in East Coast. We also helped with a youth group and English lessons. I got to help harvest with a little old lady named Victoria…I will tell you all about her later. Sometimes I think God puts us in situations just so that we can share someone’s story. Here is Kenyi’s story, I hope it touches you as much as it touched me.
Meet Kenyi!
The first night we got to Peru we spent it at the missionaries house in Huancayo and they told us about the boy that the community calls the miracle child.
How I met Kenyi:
Tiffany, Lacey, and I helped out at a school in East Coast. Every day there were between 14-17 pre-school aged children. It got a little stressed at times, especially when it rained and we couldn’t go outside! One day while we were working at the school (I was pretty overwhelmed on this particular day) this little boy came up to me and just started talking in Spanish. I did my best to keep up with my Spanglish. There was something about this little boy, he was so full of life! That day we got to go outside to the field to play and the teacher told me to hold hands and walk the little boy outside that I had just met. As we were walking I noticed that he was different then the other children. We walked slower then the others and enjoyed the scenery. We came across a little baby cow and went and pet it. When we walked across this bridge the boy kept on talking about “agua” and how much he loves it so we sat there for a moment and watched the water sparkel and move along. It was like this little boy saw everything in life and enjoyed every single moment. He saw the world with different eyes then most.
It wasn’t until a few days later that I found out he was Kenyi, the boy that they call the miracle child.
His story:
When Kenyi was born he couldn’t walk or talk, the doctors said he would never walk or talk. In an attempt to give Kenyi a “normal” life his mother asked the Drums (the missionaries we worked with here in Peru) if he could attend a regular school with all the other children. Children with dissabilities here have to go to a different school, a school that doesn’t have very good education and usually doesn’t have room for many children. The Drums agreed without hesitation. Kenyi is 4 years old now and he walks, and talks…a lot! He is going to continue to go to “normal” school. Everyone in the community knows that he is a miracle, that his very breath is a miracle and Kenyi doesn’t take one single day for granted. I have to ask myself…why do we take so much for granted? I hope his story touched you and maybe even helped you see with different eyes, I know that Kenyi helped me SEE…I mean really SEE and enjoy every single moment of life.
I will continue to carry him in my heart, now and forever.
