To paint the picture for you, we were on our 27th hour of traveling, coming close to the end of our third and longest flight, and I had just finished a 4am breakfast of pancakes and fruit. The night has been restless with many sleeping positions but very little sleep. I was lucky enough to land myself a window seat, so between sleeping attempts I would check out the window to see if I could see anything. Every attempt since take off was to no avail, I couldn’t even see the wingtip.

After breakfast, I gave up my fruitless attempts of sleep and decided I would peek out the window once more. With the expectancy to see pitch black, I was greeted with the small shining smile of the moon. As I continued to peer out the window, I saw the wingtip, spotted the constellation of Orion’s Belt, and a few prominent other stars.

With the excitement of having something to look at, I was soon pressed up with my face to the window, hands wrapped around my forehead trying to block out the lights producing reflection from inside of the cabin.

I took it all in. The longer I looked, the more stars I saw. Eventually, you could even make out (barely) the gray dusting of stars that filled the background that are too small to pick out individually.

God promised to Abraham that he would make his descendants as numerous as the stars:

Then the Lord took Abram outside and said to him, “Look up into the sky and count the stars if you can. That’s how many descendants you will have!” – Genesis 15:5 NLT

Then:

He counts the stars and calls them all by name. – Psalm 147:4 NLT

We are the stars! We are the descendants! God is calling each one of us by name. He is even calling you!

As we approached landing and the cabin lights became to bright to block out, I meditated and found joy in the thought that I am I a star in God’s big sky and that I am known by Him.
