6:15 a.m.
– Wake up and get ready for the day.
7:00 a.m.
– Head to breakfast in the common room. Today we had pancakes with fruit!
7:45 a.m.
– Deep Dive! On Tuesday and Friday morning Kevin, one of the base elders comes and teaches us how to look at Gods word and really study it deeply.
9:40 a.m.
– Grab our backpacks, lunches and ministry supplies for the day and begin the walk to our village! It’s filled with beautiful mountain views, corn fields, street corn sellers yelling “buenos!” and crazy buses almost hitting us.
10:00 a.m.
– Arrive in Llano. On this day we worked on our mural in the morning, painting the sky, touching up the mountains and finishing the painting on the Tienda next door.
– Some afternoons we’ll have house visits, pray for the sick, or teach English to the kids in the village but this day we finished painting around 1:30 because a lady in our village that we really love, invited us to her granddaughters 10th birthday that night at 6:00.
2:00 p.m.
– The Race isn’t always happy, sometimes we see hard things and struggle to understand &a process them. Today we saw a mentally handicapped boy walking around on his own, covered in cow poo. We see him all the time but this day he seemed upset and kept trying to get us to stay by grabbing our hands and pulling us back. We walked him home and realized his little brother who is physically handicapped was left locked inside and their parents weren’t home. We didn’t know what to do and we didn’t know how to handle the situation, we can’t let him follow us, the road isn’t safe for him to be walking with us and his mom would wonder where he is. A neighbor helped us get him to stay on his steps and not follow us, but I think we all left a little heartbroken.
2:30 p.m.
– We got back home, showered, and got settled for a little bit of processing and rest. Rest is such an important part of the Race, when your spiritually under the stress of constant ministry in a foreign country and usually going through a spiritual journey of your own with God, you’re tired physically too. So we took the afternoon to rest and spend time with God before the party.
5:30 p.m.
– Dinner time! Tonight we has some kind of meat with a hard boiled egg in it, with potatoes and vegetables.
5:40 p.m.
– Left for the party in our nicer clothes and brushed hair, and started walking back to our village.
6:00 p.m.
– Got to Suzzell’s (birthday girl) house and went into a room with candles, decorations and stools for us to sit on. We finally met her mom who is usually at work in Antigua during the day when we visit. She speaks fluent English so we talked about our faith, travel, her family and husband, their jobs and foods we like. They served us nachos, lemon cake and Sprite. Her husband came home early from work (he usually gets home around 9:00) to celebrate too, he was really shy but offered to drive us home since the road isn’t safe to walk on at night. It was one of my favorite nights so far! Great conversations, so so so much love within the family that just overflowed onto us, and being out after 6:00 p.m. was nice too!
8:00 p.m.
– Girls night! All the girls on the squad hung out together and did “speed dating”. So we moved around and talked with girls we hadn’t really talked to before and asked funny and deep questions to get to know everyone. Something we’ve learned is that everyone you meet has another part of Gods heart, and if you don’t take the time to get to know them then you’re missing out on seeing that face of Jesus.
9:30 p.m.
– Shower, some music or sometimes a movie, lavender oil and several layers of pajamas because it’s freezing at night & Guatemala doesn’t use insulation (or HVAC) then it’s bed time by 10:00!
Thanks for reading my first day in the life blog! I hope you got see a little bit into The Race and what it looks like to live life on mission, it is truly a blessing! It is tiring sometimes, but 110% worth it for how full my heart is all. the. time. Doing what God asks you to do will always result in His glory & your benefit. Thanks God!
