Maybe you’re thinking about going on the World Race

Maybe you’re thinking world racers are some kind of rare breed of human

Maybe you’re reading every blog you can in preparation for the world race

Wherever you’re at here are some things that sometimes happen on the race you might want know about:

Sometimes your teammate gets sprayed with mace in a Serbian Village

Sometimes you get head lice and you have incredible squad mates that comb them out of your hair

Sometimes you buy sparkling water for the 39th time and decide it’s not so bad

Sometimes you take three trains to get to Dracula’s Castle to be there 30 minutes

Sometimes you get to see five of your squad mates get baptized

Sometimes you meet world champion Kendama players

Sometimes you eat weird forest berries because your host says you can

Sometimes you find your favorite flavor of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream and cry at month one debrief

Sometimes a windstorm cancels all your plans for the night

Sometimes you dye the bottoms of your hair blue just because

Sometimes you come across a random carnival ride when you only have two hours in a city….and you ride it anyway

Sometimes you think some sheepdogs are going to eat you alive but then they don’t

Sometimes you buy ice cream and it tastes like Thanksgiving turkey?

Sometimes you are so amazed at the way the Lord is screaming at you that you seriously think your life is fake

Sometimes you freak out because there’s a double rainbow and it was a super long day

Sometimes you cook rice for 45 people and it takes three hours

Sometimes you met a gap year squad and you know a weird amount of the same people

Sometimes laugh until you cry for 45 minutes because the bagel chips you bought taste so bad

Sometimes you hike a mountain and there’s so much loose dirt the only way to get down is sliding down with a huge dust cloud behind you

Sometimes you cry outside of a Romanian Economics High School

Sometimes you help someone receive Christ into their heart in the middle of the street

Sometimes your teammate goes to wifi with you and sits as far away as possible because you’re introverted

Sometimes you share a whole chicken with someone for dinner because everything else is closed from the windstorm

Sometimes you get hype at the top of a mountain to Jesus Paid it All

Sometimes (jk always) the Romanians school you in soccer for 12 rounds in a row

Sometimes you sing Breaking Free as a duet at all squad karaoke

Sometimes your whole team also sings Man I Feel Like a Woman (yes there are guys on my team)

Sometimes you almost buy mayonnaise instead of butter because you can’t read Serbian

There are a lot of “sometimes” on the world race, but you learn a lot through all of them. I’m super thankful for all the “how in the world did I get here” moments and I can’t wait for more of them. I love thinking about how the Lord is laughing along side me through all of it and pushing me more into the uncomfortable.

Xoxo,

Alexis
