I love you Myanmar.
I did not expect this country to take hold of so much of my heart. I came in tired (long travel day but not nearly as long as some of my squadmates) and working through quite a bit processing with team changes. I did not know much about this place except that a lot of people were surprised I was going.
We got here and I realized we were teaching English and over half my team has education degrees/has previously taught school in the US. Honestly – the only time I liked English class was my senior year of high school. (Love you Debbie Bounds I know you’re reading this!!!)
But as the month went on, the friendships with our students became so wonderful. Our students – 5 friends from a local game shop – came to class twice a week and the park twice a week. They came to our “culture night” and brought all kinds of traditional Myanmar food. They took us in and taught us to play their computer game (Caitlin and I did win don’t worry.) – it was so fun and intense honestly. They gave us food and tea and even rode the bus back with us until our stop. They came to church our last Sunday and used their ENGLISH (maybe we did actually teach them something??) to say things to encourage us before we left.
IT WAS SO SWEET I COULDN’T TAKE IT.
This month was full of surrender at the begging and so much joy at the end for me. I learned about accepting grace humbly and that every ministry isn’t going to come naturally to me, but even in that weakness the Lord uses my strengths.
Until Africa,
Alexis
