Who knew that waiting for the adventure of a lifetime would be so hard? Yes, when I signed up for the World Race I realized that I had virtually 3/4ths of a year until I finally got on the plane, but I had no idea how long these months were going to feel… and it’s only been two so far.
God has been teaching me a lesson lately that no one really wants to hear, and that is patience. Whether that was in my devotion times where I just longed to feel his presence, during frustrating conflicts in relationships, or simply hitting every single red light as I travel back and forth from school each day. Paul tells us to be “strengthened with all power according to God’s glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience” (Colossians 1:11). Which means that no matter what we face, God can give us the power we need to have patience. We tend to struggle with patience because we don’t like the circumstances we are facing. We as humans like to feel in control, and when we feel out of control, we get complacent. And yet, because our Lord is in control, we can be patient. We can rest in the fact that we have a heavenly father who loves us, and who is with us every step of the way. And although I simply cannot wait until I embark on this adventure, in the meantime I think I need a few more red lights to just sit back and thank God for the power he gives us, and find joy in the little things. Personally I have been so encouraged by my squad, and have loved getting to know them all and their stories. (Those of you who are reading this you’re all dope and I love you.) There kindness, passion and excitement for what lies ahead next year keeps me going, and they are truly a blessing to my life.
So if you struggle with patience, know you are not the only one. When hardships test our patience it is the love and power of our God who can lift our burdens, and hold us in his beautiful presence. Ask him for peace, and He will give it to you.
“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him” (Psalm 37:7).
