I’m so very sorry to all of you who have been waiting for an update since I arrived in South Africa and are just now getting one. It’s always my intentions to write blogs to keep everyone at home posted, but somehow time manages to continue to get the best of me, and the next thing I know, two months have gone by in a new country and I still haven’t written a blog, so thank you all for being so patient!
These last two months in South Africa have been my favorite two months on the race, so far. South Africa has the most beautiful mountains, oceans, and people I have ever seen. This place is literally like something you would see on a movie. I can’t even begin to put in words how incredible it has been to call this place home for the last couple of months, but bear with me as I try to tell you what life in South Africa has looked like for me!
Immediately after my team and I arrived in Cape Town, we got in a taxi to travel to Ocean View (where we live). I suddenly felt a flood of relief crash over me and the next thing I know, tears started rolling down my face. My ministry host then looked at me and said that God wanted to tell me that the time I spend in South Africa will be a season full of joy and freedom. Looking back, two months ago, I didn’t really understand what he was saying to me, but know it’s so evident that everything spoken out that day is absolutely true!
Over the last two months, ministry has been unlike anything I thought it would be. Coming on the race, I thought ministry was only telling people about God, but I learned that it’s about loving them. As I’m here I’m learning that ministry is about serving people as well.
The first month, it was summer break for all the kids, so my team and I just spent time hanging out with the kids around our neighborhood. We played endless soccer games and never ending Uno matches. Getting to build relationships with the kids was a bigger blessing to me than I would have ever realized.
When school started back up in January, my team and I became P.E. teachers at Simons Town High School, and boy does God know what He is doing because I have never loved doing something more. I get to hang out with high-schoolers all day while playing fun kid games like birdie on a perch. I get to build relationships with the students, and eventually get to share my stories and hear theirs. I get to not only tell them, but show them how much I love them simply because God loves them. There is no way life can get better than that.
I don’t know what the next month here in South Africa holds, but I do know that if it’s anything like the first two months, my heart will be the happiest it’s ever been!
