This past Saturday my team and I went into Phonom Phem for our off day. We visited the Killing Fields and S21. It was a hard day. We learned about Cambodia’s genocide of their own people by their own people. 1975-1979. The leader of the Communist party in Cambodia took over the country and began to make a “pure” people. All intellectuals, diplomates, and religious people were killed. People were evacuated, tortured, and taken to camps. For me personally S21 was the hardest part of our tour. There we saw photography of the horrors that had taken place there. We heard personal accounts by survivors. Some of the trials against the leaders put on by the UN were in 2007/2009. This whole experience made me value our kids so much more. A miracle that they are even here. And our grandma neighbor – she’s lived through this!! I saw our new loved ones in those pictures. We raced home to give hugs and kisses.
