The past few days we’ve been in Bangkok with YWAM where we received cultural briefing. There are quite a few things that are different here than what I’m used to and even from what I’ve seen in the past 4 countries. There is so much culture, history and respect here. These are the Top 10 things you need to know about Thailand!
1. Thais consider the head as the most honorable part of the body. It is a great insult to touch a person’s head, reach over it or point at a person’s face.
2. The foot is considered to be “dirty.” Never point your feet (especially the bottom) at someone, refer to it or draw attention to it unnecessarily. Never move anything with your foot or step over someone if they are sitting down.
3. Take your shoes off before entering a house, office, store, etc. Basically any time you’re not on the street, you’re barefoot.
4. Buddhist monks are forbidden to touch or be touched by a woman or to accept anything from the hand of one. All males are expected to spend time as a monk whether it be for a few weeks or a lifetime.
5. The Thais have a deep respect for the Royal Family. We were told to only say, “He’s a great man,” when asked our opinion of the king. The National Anthem is played at 8am and 6pm and everyone stops what they are doing and stands still at attention.
6. It is not polite to show emotion in public.
7. It is considered rude to point at things or people.
8. Always be aware of the volume of your voice. It is impolite to laugh loudly in public. (May be my biggest challenge!)
9. Gifts are generally open in private, not in front of the giver.
10. The food is so good! Fresh fruit, meat on a stick, you name it, it is delicious. And really cheap too!
So there it is folks. A little different than things back home, eh?
What would be your most challenging “rule” to follow?
