This year at Christmas I had none of the Labelle family traditions, none of the people I usually spend time with, none of the typical things I do. However this year I got to spend the holidays with the truth of the season without all typical distractions.
I got to spend Christmas with 13 other racers and 8 new family members; worshipping Jesus around a bonfire, listening to the Christmas story and reveling in knowing that there is no where else I’d rather spend this day.
This year the Christmas story hit me in a whole new way. It’s actually been a whole month of realizing that we make things more complicated then we need to. The reason for the season is that God LOVED us so much that He sent His Son. LOVE is by far the greatest gift anyone could give another person – but no love we show anyone matches the insurmountable love The Father feels for us. A love that is so genuine, pure and unfailing that it causes us to change, to pursue righteousness.
It’s a love that I will never fully comprehend because it is so undeserved. A love that meets you where you are, a love that will ultimately change your life if you let it. It’s understanding that no matter how far you run, or what your background is that God doesn’t care because He loves you. It’s God love that finds us in the depths of darkness, that picks us up and brings us into the light, that transforms our hearts and spurs us on to greater things.
It’s this exact love that found me in my darkness – that saved me from a life of drunken promiscuity, of materialism, of selling myself short, and brought me into a life of purpose. A life where I understand that nothing else matters but Jesus – that if I have nothing else but Him that I still have the most valuable thing I can possess. That everything I have in this world will one day not matter, but what will matter is that I lived a life of obedience and surrender to the God who created the universe.
So as you begin a new year I urge you to take a moment and think about the love and blessings God’s poured out into your life over the past year. To spend a moment thanking God for the love He showed us in sending Jesus, and the LOVE & grace that He continues to show us.
