My name is Aimee D’Hondt and I am going to be
serving in Chiang Mai, Thailand for the next two years, starting mid-August. I
am going through Adventures In Missions (based out of Gainesville, Georgia),
but will be serving with several local ministries in Thailand. A few of the
organizations I will be doing work with include (though not limited to):

Free Burma Rangers www.freeburmarangers.org

Remember Nhu  www.remembernhu.org

YWAM Lighthouse in action www.ywamthai.org/lighthouse/

Calling:

My heart is for the Burmese people who are
crossing the Thai border seeking refuge from genocide taking place in their
country. The Burmese government is extremely corrupt and has basically been
ruled by an abusive military regime since the 60’s. The country is currently
engaged in one of the longest running civil wars in history. The people have no
civil rights and the ethnic groups are oppressed and treated with brutal
violence. If you would like more information on Burma , its history, or the
current situation, there is a blog post at aimeedhondt.theworldrace.org that is
very informative and helpful.

While in Thailand, the main contact I will be
working with is the Free Burma Rangers. This organization is having a huge
impact inside Burma and even in Northern Thailand where they are based. I
originally met FBR while doing missions work in Thailand in February of 2011. I
stayed at the home of the founder and his family, and my time with them changed
everything for me. That is when my passion for the Burmese people was ignited.
The next month, I worked with Burmese refugees at a UN Refugee school in Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia, and my love for them grew even more.

Ministry:

As
I mentioned, FBR has huge influence in Burma. The founder, Dave Eubank goes on
missions into Burma with teams to bring food, supplies, medical care, and hope
to the ethnic people fleeing from the oppressive military junta. FBR is mainly
made up of ethnic leaders and volunteers who are trained in several areas
including medical care and military skill to protect the ethnic minorities
during attacks.

When I arrive in Chiang Mai I am hoping to just help FBR
with any needs they have. I may do some administrative work for them from time
to time, but am mostly planning to work at a Burmese youth hostel in Thailand, teaching
English and doing devotionals for the kids a few days a week.

A few days a week, I will also be partnering with a YWAM
group called “Love Acts” and a children’s home called Remember Nhu. Love Acts
is an outreach for women and lady boys working in bars in the red light
district in Chiang Mai. Remember Nhu a children’s
home that takes in children that are at-risk for being sold into the sex trade
industry. Working with them will include spending time with the kids and
helping with construction for a new home.

Videos:

Here are a few video links (that I also have
on my blog) that describe the situation in Burma.

(This was my original “About Me” for the World Race…)

Welcome to my World Race blog!! I am so excited about this trip and what God is going to do over the next 11 months. I will be updating my page hopefully every month during my trip, so feel free to follow and make comments!

But first, here are a few things about me…

Most Recently (July 2010):
I just graduated with a degree in Communications from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. I also minored in French. This year I joined the Cal Poly triathlon team and raced my first Olympic tri at Wildflower. I was also an International Student Mentor for our international program at Cal Poly and met a lot of really awesome international students 🙂 I even had to French students  living at my house for 3 months while my roommates were abroad. For the summer I am waitressing at a restaurant in San Luis Obispo (SLO) and trying to soak up my time here before going abroad! Oh- and I just had my 22nd birthday in June 🙂

Family:
I have a really large and complicated family, but love them all! My mom is remarried and i have 4 younger step siblings on that side. My father is also remarried and I have two older step sisters. I have one biological brother, Michael, who is two years older than me, and one of my closest friends. Altogether, I feel very lucky to have such a large, loving family.

Things I like:
Chocolate, Cats, Classic films, Foreign and Indie films, Musicals and Theater, Reading, France, Audrey Hepburn, Baby Cactus, Sketching, Thrift Store Shopping, Hiking, Cycling, the Beach, Traveling, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Line Dancing, Salsa Dancing, Swing, Macaroni and Cheese, Skiing, Wakeboarding, Shakespeare, doing new things!

Places where I want to travel: Everywhere! International people and the cultures are the best!!!

Why I decided to go on the World Race:
I’ve known for some time that I wanted to spend the year after I graduated abroad. I have such a passion for international cultures, that I wanted to learn more about all the people of the world and spend time in different cultures. I really wanted to combine this passion with ministry around the world. This trip is an amazing opportunity to travel do 3 different continents and love people everywhere I go. I know its going to be an unforgettable year that will change my outlook on life and hopefully will be a blessing to those I meet.
