I have spent my past few months living among false idols. The school I’ve stayed in for 2 months is sandwiched between a Hindu and a Muslim community. I hear the call to prayer 4 times a day, and every corner I turn holds a different shrine with a different statue of a different god, a false god. The spiritual heaviness is tangible, and genuine smiles are a rare.
All around me is ignorance and brokenness, yet still God has compassion. In a place where there is little recognition, the Lord God is still mighty, loving, and powerful. Amongst thousands of other “gods,” the Lord God is still greater. In a place where the darkness and brokenness are so apparent and tangible, your light still shines through. The evidence of your love is all around me; I see it in the eyes of the children, and I hear it in the quiet hymns that are sang on rooftops at night. No amount of darkness could ever hide your love.
“Who is like you, O LORD, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders? You stretched out your right hand; the earth swallowed them. You have led in your steadfast love the people whom you have redeemed; you have guided them by your strength to your holy abode.” – Exodus 15:11-13 ESV
God is also so accessible. He does not demand us to dress up and make shrines and go to temples to worship him. We do not have to wait for a call to prayer to pray. He loves us so much that he humbled himself and meets us right where we’re at, wherever that may be. Thank you God for sending your son Jesus so that we have access to you. “In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.” – Ephesians 3:12 NIV
Thank you God for loving us so well, even when we don’t deserve it.
