Fruit grows from the root of delight, not discipline.

I’m mid-quiet time right now as I write this. I was reading a Psalm when God started piecing together truths about the function of discipline versus the function of delight.

I wrote Psalm 91:14-16 in my journal —

“Because she delighted in me as her Lover, I’ll protect her. I’ll set her in a high place, safe and secure before my gaze. I’ll answer her when she cries for help and she will find and feel my presence even in the midst of pressure and trouble. I’ll be her Glorious Hero, and I’ll give her a feast. She will be satisfied with a full life and with all that I do for her. She will enjoy the fullness of my salvation.”

He told me that He’d protect me because I delighted in Him. He said He’d answer me because I loved Him. He said He’d be my Hero because I drew my resources from Him. He said He’d satisfy me with a full life because I looked to Him to be my joy.

Discipline not rooted in delight is religion.

When you delight in something, you give your whole self to it. People will look at you and think she’s so disciplined, but you’ll shrug your shoulders because you’re just so in love. Discipline is not the root of delight, discipline is the fruit of delight.
