WARNING: some content may seem disturbing/concerning. We are all safe and healthy here in Honduras!!

You know you’re in Honduras when….

-you live in the clouds surrounded by flowers and horses and sheep

-FUERA JOH (“Get out President Juan”) is chanted and pots and pans are banged together every night at 9 pm for 2 weeks after the election

-showers are ice cold…so most people view them as optional (one guy on my squad hasn’t showered in 24 days…he still smells fine thanks to deodorant, febreze, and baby wipes)

-your squad mates heat water over the bonfire so they can take a warm bucket shower

-rice and beans taste incredible…and you learn there’s about 100 different ways to serve them

-55° feels like the dead of winter and you don’t want to leave your sleeping bag

-the toilets are clogged multiple days a day

-it gets dark at 5 and you feel like going to bed at 6

-your butcher Spanish verb conjugations about 100 times a day

-you walk into the living room and your friends are piercing your guy friend’s nose

-bonfires happen on the nightly and you always smell like smoke

-laundry on the washboard takes an hour

-you consume no dairy (unless you count sour creme) and way too many carbs

-every guy cat calls

-you learn how to make homemade tortillas and refried beans

-the power goes off any time there’s a wind storm

-you see the most brilliant night sky you’ve ever seen in your life (including an incredible shooting

star)

-you always look forward to going to a small local church who treat you like family (and translate for you!!)

-you have Joy to the World and Silent Night memorized in Spanish

-you buy organic parasite medicine for yourself because your friend coughs up a worm and you’re incredibly paranoid

-every single house has razor wire on top of their 10 foot wall and multiple pit bulls

-plantain chips are the new Fritos

-you sneeze out fuzz (thanks to yarn-rolling)

-breakfast is either pancakes or fruit loops

-you light off a liter of fireworks in one night

-chocolate chip cookies are a far-off dream

-the owner of your favorite cafe brings his router to and from work with him…so you never know when there’ll be wifi

-Feliz Navidad is constantly stuck in your head

We only have 3 weeks left here in the Hondo, and I’m savoring every day. As you can tell, I’ve been building so many memories here, and leaving will be so bittersweet. I hope this blog post made you chuckle 😉 much love!
