So far, I’ve been in Guatemala for approximately a month and a half. Time has been flying by! My team and I have been teaching English in the public schools. Literally, each day is different. One day we could teach all six classes or teach one class. After awhile of teaching and not knowing what each day holds, our gracious host allowed us the opportunity to see the beautiful country of Guatemala!

Yesterday, we took inter tubes down a river that went through a cave. We were given flash lights because once you’re in the cave it’s pitch black. It was very exhilarating! Afterwards, we hopped in the car to drive 4 hours to get the island of Flores. Once in Flores we got into a boat that took us to our Hostel.

After an exciting day I was couldn’t wait to put my head to rest, but I needed to shower. At 6am, with a groggy mind from sleep I went into the shower stall only to realize I forgot to turn the light on. Before I could search for the switch, I felt something crawl across my foot. I squeaked a little and got out of the shower as quickly as possible (thankfully I still had clothes on)! I found the switch and poked my head into the shower stall. Low and behold there is a giant spider on the floor, two lizards on the wall, and insects flying around. As many know, I detest spiders! And one just crawled across my foot!!! The little girl inside of me was screaming. Instead of freaking out, I killed the spider. Realized the lizards won’t hurt me, the insects will try to flee from the water, and proceeded with my shower.
One lesson I learned today is to always check the shower before entering, but there’s a bigger lesson here too.

In our Christian walk we can get very distracted, especially in the States. When we aren’t focused on The Lord, we get really groggy and don’t pay attention to where we are going. Before you know it, you find yourself walking in the dark and it’s not until something crawls across your foot that light is needed. The light (Jesus), reveals all “dangers” you’re getting yourself into. Instead of just leaving you to fend for yourself, Jesus gives you the strength/courage squash those “dangers.” The only problem is we have to trust Jesus to get us through, because the little girl is going to be kicking and screaming. She’ll be telling you to run, but what you’re most afraid of is usually the direction you need to be going in. Moral of the story; Focus on Jesus and when you’re afraid leave it Jesus’ feet. He’ll take care of you!
