You are probably wondering what I have been doing here in Guatemala. It has been amazing and I would love to share. First let me tell you that I will be flying home on May 31st!! I cant believe that there are only 3 weeks left of this amazing 9 month adventure. There is so much excitement to be home, see my friends, family, and to sleep in my own bed. There are also nerves and sadness leaving those that have become so close to me these past nine.
My team along with another team on my squad are partnering with an organization called One Way. One Way teaches soccer and gives different classes to children in one of the communities in Guatemala. They used to bring all the kids on to the soccer field and teach them there but since Covid regulations came out they have not been able to do this. Instead they walk around to each of the houses and give classes in the kid’s homes and if available they still sometimes teach soccer on the field. My team splits off into groups of two and go with one of the One Way volunteered teachers. We either give English lessons (which is very helpful since english is our first language) about animals, colors, numbers, the alphabet, or simple objects and verbs. Sometimes we give art lessons, which is my favorite, or we help with the children’s school work packets. One Way also provides opportunities in this community for families to make money. Whether that be by giving them chickens for one way to then collect the eggs, sell them, and give the money back to the family. They also give out food carts to some of the families and provide them with the supplies needed to sell their food like chicken, sandwiches, or granizadas. One Way also provides a meal for the children once or twice a week. They give out food bags, water filters, or other supplies that the families might need.
On weekends we have adventure days. We are pretty much able to do what we want with permission. Sometimes we go into Antigua or Guatemala City and explore. Some people on my squad hiked and spent the night on top of a volcano. We might go to Lake Atitlan on one of our last weekends. Or we are allowed to stay back on the base and relax.
Thank you all so much for supporting and constantly praying for me throughout this whole journey. It really means a lot and it is greatly appreciated.
God Bless,
Megan
