The Relationships You Build
One of the greatest gifts is getting to build relationships with people from all different walks of life. The Lord is a relational God, He pursues His children and He calls us to do the same. He has allowed me to hear people’s stories, testimonies, heart-break, celebrations, and struggles. It is the greatest privilege to be entrusted with the hearts of image bearers. One of my sweetest relationships the Lord gifted me with is with a girl my age named Angelica. We met in the pouring rain on a soccer field that was a little too grassy for my liking in the foothills of the Costa Rican mountains. We got to share with each other our love of sports, our favorite foods, family lives, funny stories, things that are hard and she became such a genuine friend. The Race gives you a glimpse deeper into the Father’s heart for His children and it is so sweet.

Community
Community was one of the things I said I was most nervous for but also most excited for. My squad went from strangers from across the country to my family. From spontaneous worship sessions, to dance parties, team dinners, and late night porch hangs, community has been such a blessing. When you live with a lot of people in a really small space, it gets really hard to hide the parts of you that you’d rather not everyone know about you (Morning breath? Irritability? Weird habits?). The scariest parts of World Race is your squad gets to know you really really well, but it’s also the biggest blessing. The way my squad has loved me and I have chosen to love my squad has shown me the unchanging love of Christ (granted He is a lot better at loving people than we are). Community refines you and teaches you patience. It teaches you to choose to love the people you might not have picked to live with. It is sanctifying and joyful. I’m going to miss my squad a whole lot and I’m so thankful to have them.

If You Have a Heart to Serve
The Race is a place where you are serving all day every day. A common phrase you will hear on the Race is “life is ministry, ministry is life” and it is so true! The Race lives this motto out. Our hours aren’t 9-5 but our jobs as servants of the Most High are to walk with a heart of worship, gratitude, and servitude. Sometimes, you’ll be waking up at 6 am to enjoy your cup of tea and read your Bible but some staff is already at work doing some construction and you’re asked to hop in, or you are walking down the street on your off day and see someone in need of prayer or physical help. The Race teaches you that your “off-day” shouldn’t look that much different from ministry. It teaches you to serve from overflow.

If You Want to Dive Deeper with the Lord
Ooof I could take about this one for a while, BUT, I’ll spare you and keep it short. You encounter a lot on the race. you see really hard things, you hear really hard stories, things still happen at home, you get exhausted. The race makes you wrestle with the Lord and ask the hard questions. You will encounter a lot, I mean ALOT of different beliefs, religions and world-views on the race. You’ll be serving alongside people, even on your squad, that you might not see eye-to-eye on in every theological thing. It will push you to hunger for the Word and to walk with discernment. The Race has shown me why I believe what I believe, and has brought me to a new depth with the Lord.

If the Lord Called You
This one is the most obvious and ultimately the only one that matters. The World Race is so exciting but it also comes with a lot of challenges. If fundraising is stopping you, the Lord provides. If it’s the fear of missing out, He is the only thing that satisfies. If it’s fear of leaving your home and comforts, He is our home and He is our comforter. Maybe you don’t feel good enough, He will equip you if He has called you. Trust Him. Maybe you aren’t sure if the Lord has called you. I’m no expert but some really good testers are if it aligns with Scripture and mature, older, Christian mentors in your life agree.
The Race is incredible! The Race is growing! The Lord has shown me so much fruit through the Race! The Race is hard! The Race isn’t the only way to serve the Lord or encounter the Lord (blog post coming about 5 Reasons You Shouldn’t Do the World Race), but if He is calling you to it, do it! I know this is a series for future racers, so if you have any questions feel free to email me ([email protected]) or DM me _marymoffett and I am happy to talk, and even if you aren’t planning on going on the race but have questions, please feel free to contact me also!
Have a great day!
Mary
