This past week I was blessed with the opportunity to go on a missions trip to Puerto Rico. I’ll admit that the days leading up to the trip had my doubts and concerns. Would I be capable enough? Would I get along with my team? All things that God would’ve been able to handle.
My team and I lead a VBS at a local church in Orocovis. The language barrier made it challenging but God worked so much in that. Many of the kids did speak English and were able to translate which was pretty incredible to me. It was really cool being able to bond with the kids and the adults we got to work with. One of my favorite parts about the week was when one of the girls I had in my group told me that it was the first time she had heard about Jesus and she loved it. That made my heart so happy, knowing that God had really helped us accomplish our goal.
As well as running a VBS, we also visited with some of the people of Orocovis. I am always impressed and humbled by the faith and dedication to Christ of anyone that I meet and these visits were no different. The people we met haven’t exactly had it easy but they’re faithful. They have given their trust to God and it truly shows. This is was faith is supposed to look like and I know I want to follow in their footsteps.
I feel as though, while we went to be a blessing to these people and teach them the gospel. I learned more from them than I taught. In addition to learning how to have faith, I also learned how to pray. Now obviously there is no one way to pray, but the way they did it was far from half-hearted. They showed their trust in the power of prayer and it paid off for them.
Overall, God has grown me through this, taught me through this and helped me to grow closer to my friends and the Lord. It has only confirmed that missions work is what I truly want to do and I’m excited to see where God takes me next.
