ESPAÑOL:
Una de mis partes favoritas de world race son las celebraciones, principalmente porque hay que ponerse creativo con lo que uno tiene, y termina siendo muy divertido! Mientras estaba en Etiopía tuve mi cumpleaños y el día de San Valentín. Quiero contarles cómo celebramos estos días en medio de la nada en África!
Cumpleaños
Fue el 24 de enero y sinceramente no esperaba mucho, porque en serio no teníamos muchas opciones ahí. Sin embargo, mi team es muy creativo y me conoce muy bien, así que me planearon un gran día!
– Me despertaron con música de High School Musical (mi película favorita por siempreee).
– Decoraron nuestra mesa con cosas de fiesta de cumpleaños, un papel que decía “Propiedad de Costa Rica” y los clásicos globos de “feliz cumpleaños” que todo el squad ha usado para todos los cumpleaños.
– Ellas saben cuánto amo el chocolate, así que cuando fuimos a la capital un par de semanas antes, me compraron muchos tipos de chocolates!
– Hicimos galletas con ingredientes a los que teníamos acceso en la base.
– Recibí muchas notas y cartas lindas del squad y de gente en casa (que me las dieron antes de irme).
– Los increíbles cocineras de la base hicieron un queque de chocolate solo para mí! ¡Delicioso!
– Video de cumpleaños! Con la ayuda de mi hermana, mi team juntó muchos videos de mis amigos y familiares deseándome un feliz cumpleaños. ¡Fue super lindo! ¡Gracias a todos los que enviaron videos! Me sentí muy especial y amada.
– ¡Mega fiesta de cumpleaños para los niños! Vivíamos en un orfanato con 30 niños, que no todos conocen sus cumpleaños debido a sus circunstancias. Entonces HOPEthiopia celebra todos sus cumpleaños juntos una vez al año. ¡Esta vez resultó ser el mismo día que mi cumpleaños! ¡ME ENCANTÓ! ¿Cuándo más podés decir que tuviste una fiesta de cumpleaños con tus 30 lindos amigos etíopes? Pasamos la tarde jugando con ellos y celebrándolos. También habíamos contactado previamente a personas que han venido a HOPEthiopia antes con World Race, y reunimos un video de ellos deseándoles a los niños un gran día! ¡Les encantó! ¡Fue super lindo ver cómo recuerdan claramente a todos los misioneros, incluso después de años de no verlos!
– ¿Adivinen qué querían los niños para comer ese día? ¡PIZZA! ¡Mi comida favorita! ¡Qué gustito tener pizza en tu cumpleaños en África!
– Mi talentosa amiga Ellie es fotógrafa y también me hizo una sesión de fotos en mi cumpleaños.
– Tuvimos un torneo de “VAL-eyball”! En realidad, 2 de mis compañeros de squad querían jugar volleyball, pero nadie quería unirse, así que le pusieron así para que más personas se unieran como un regalo de cumpleaños para mí. Y funcionó jaja!
– Yo le había dicho a mi team que quería ir a ver las estrellas en la noche de mi cumpleaños. (Las estrellas ahí se ven como en ningún otro lugar!) Irónicamente, este fue el primer día que hubo aguacero en nuestro tiempo ahí! Así que mi team improvisó y usó los focos del teléfonos y coladores de la cocina dentro de nuestra cuarto para crear la ilusión de estrellas en nuestro techo. Super lindo!
¡Fue un gran día! ¡Uno de mis cumpleaños favoritos!
San Valentín
– Los hombres de nuestro squad planearon la mayoría para las mujeres. ¡Solo hay 6 hombres en nuestro squad de 42 personas! Entonces tenían mucho trabajo. Después del ministerio ese día, todos nos arreglamos para el almuerzo, donde los hombres nos estaban esperando en la puerta para escoltarnos adentro una por una. ¡Pusieron todas las mesas juntas creando una sola larga e hicieron etiquetas de nombres y cartas para todas nosotras!
– Jugamos una versión de “speed dating”. Nos daban una pregunta para responder con la persona sentada al frente. Después de un minuto, todos rotábamos y nos daban otra pregunta, como “momento más divertido de la carrera”, “historia de cita incómoda”, etc.
– En la noche, tuvimos noche de solo chicas! Juntas estudiamos la Biblia, comimos palomitas y confites, tomamos muchas fotos, bailamos… ¡Muy divertido!
– Videos musicales. LA MEJOR PARTE. Decidimos que cada team haría un video musical de una canción de amor para que todos vieran en San Valentín. ¡Todos fueron SUPER graciosos y vergonzosos al mismo tiempo!

One of my favorite parts of the Race is the celebrations, mostly cause you have to get creative with what you have, and it ends up being very fun! While in Ethiopia I had my birthday and Valentine’s Day. I wanna share with you what these days looked like in the middle of nowhere in Africa!
Birthday
It was on January 24th, and honestly I wasn’t expecting much from it, cause we really didn’t have many options there. However, my team is so creative and knows me so well, so they planned out a great day for me!
– Woke me up with High School Musical music (my favorite movie everrr).
– They decorated our table with birthday party stuff, a “Property of Costa Rica” sign, and the classic “happy birthday” balloons the whole squad has used for every birthday.
– They know how much I love chocolate, so when we went to the capital a couple weeks before that, they got me a lot of chocolate in different forms.
– We made no-bake cookies together with ingredients we had access to at the base.
– I had many cute notes and letters from the squad and people back home (that gave them to me before I left).
– The amazing cooks at the base made a chocolate cake just for me! Delicious!
– Birthday video! With my sister’s help my team collected a lot of videos from my friends and family wishing me a happy birthday. It was the sweetest thing ever!! Thank you to everyone who sent videos! I felt so special and loved!
– Mega-birthday party for the kids! We were living in an orphanage with 30 kids, who don’t always know their birthdays because of their circumstances. So HOPEthiopia celebrates all of their birthdays once a year. This time it happened to be the same day as my bday! I LOVED IT! When else can you say you had a bday party with your 30 cutie Ethiopian friends? We spent the afternoon playing with them and celebrating them too! We also had previously contacted past racers who had been to HOPEthiopia before, and put together a video of them wishing the kids a great day! They absolutely loved it! It was so cool seeing how they remember clearly every missionary even after years of not seeing them!
– Guess what the kids wanted for food on that day? PIZZA! My favorite food! What a treat to have pizza on your birthday in Africa!
– My talented friend Ellie is a photographer and gave me a photoshoot on my birthday too!
– We had a “VAL-eyball” tournament! In reality, 2 of my squadmates wanted to play volleyball, but nobody wanted to join, so they named it like this so more people would join as a birthday treat for me. It actually worked haha!
– I had told my team I wanted to star gaze the night of my birthday. (The stars there were like nothing I’ve ever seen before!) Ironically, this was the first day that it rained A LOT while we were there! So my team improvised and used phone lanterns and kitchen colanders inside our room to create the illusion of stars in our ceiling. SO SWEET!
It was a great day! One of my favorite birthdays ever!
Valentines
– The men in our squad planned most of it for us girls. There are only 6 boys in our 42 people squad! So they had a lot of work. After ministry that day, we all dressed up for lunch, where the boys were waiting on us at the door to escort us inside one by one. They had put all the tables together creating one big one and made name tags and letters for all of us!
– We played a version of “speed dating”. We were given a question to discuss with the person sitting in front of us. After a minute we would all rotate and get a new question, like “funniest moment on the race”, “awkward date story”, etc.
– In the night, the girls had a “Galentines” event! We got together, studied the Bible, had snacks and candy, a photo booth, dance party… So much fun!
– Music videos. THE BEST PART. We decided every team would make a music video to a love song for everyone to watch on Valentines. They were all SO funny and cringy at the same time! Probably don’t have permission to post them though, cause they are so embarrassing hahaha.
