The rest of our travel!
So if you read my last blog you know we traveled for 24 hours to get from Atlanta to D.C. Well, it ended up taking 4 solid days to get to our base in Nosoko, Swaziland. On the flight from D.C. to Doha, Qatar I was blessed to be able to move to the back where more of my squad was. I mean really blessed because the flight was a whole 13 hours long. And Qatar Airlines reallly treats you right. I mean to thus day I’m using their free blanket and pillow to sleep every night (no I am not a sponser). Other than all the free stuff the flight was great because of more good conversations and a seriously beautiful sunrise over who knows where. The Doha airport was fine and dandy, felt pretty American too. After a 4 hour layover we took another plane 9 hours to Johannesburg, South Africa. Though this flight was more crammed and less peaceful I got to see how my squad’s attitude affects everyone around us. Throughout the flight we’d talk to the flight attendants and at the end they gave us all the extra snacks and even asked to take a picture with us. It was really sweet. We took some time sitting around in the empty South African airport until our busses came. Then things got a little less smooth… the trailer behind the bus I was in literally just lost a tire. As in, we pulled over and there was no tire anymore and we had to idea how long the trailer had been dragging on the road. That day I ended up sitting on the side the road in South Africa for 8 hours, laying on a pile of backpacks. Our leaders said it was a very “World Race Experience” and luckily we didn’t mind the hours of rest outside after the seemingly endless travel. And once that was all fixed we drove another couple hours to the base where the rest of our squad was waiting. The grand total of all the travel was 76 hours.
Basically, we made it!
