(Disclaimer- This is a dramatized telling of September 16th 2019: The night of the Scorpion)

I have had to adjust to the missionary life on this trip as expected. However, what wasn’t expected were the ear piercing screams of teammates at 10pm (middle of the night for us) because there is a GIANT scorpion right next to Aubreys head.

I may be dramatizing the size of this scorpion a little, but he was NOT small. I was very disinterested, because I was nice and safe in my mosquito net (also very very tired) Meanwhile everyone is sprung out of bed trying to save one of the girls from her bunk. Suddenly a night in shining armor (our team leader Morgan) threw on her sweater, a glove, and grabbed her trusty pocket knife.

The idea was to get on the bunk bed where our poor teammate was trapped, and stab the terrifying, deathly scorpion. (The Scorpion was later found out to be harmless. Don’t worry)

Now Morgan is sitting up on the bunk while other teammates are carrying down Aubrey from her bunk bed. Unexpectedly the knife didn’t even make contact with the Creature. Instead everyone began to scream as the scorpion proceeded to crawl very very slowly down the wall.

By now everyone is on the ground standing very far away from the scorpion. The scorpion we will call him Curt is now on the floor. He’s pinned himself up against the wall, so we had no way to trap him. At this point Curt is a bit too close to my bed. I now began to panic. One of the girls suggested to put a bucket over top of Curt, and drag him out of the room. This was attempted several times. Anytime someone would get close they’d jump back.

I thought this was ridiculous. Im thinking “Just throw the bucket on him its not that hard” So I attempted. Right as I was about to trap Curt something in me made me jump back in horror. I realized the girls were not being “wimps” it was genuinely TERRIFYING! A very long time has passed by now. (At least it feels like it has) My throat is sore from screaming, and head hurts from all the yelling. Our Hero Halston grabs the bucket, positions herself close to Curtis….and….BAM SHE GOT EM!! We all jumped with joy! People were crying people were falling on there knees! Just kidding none of that happened, butttt I was so happy Curt was out of my life.

The next morning we found out that the scorpion was infact harmless, and was actually a pregnant female. This might explain why she was so huge. At the end of the day we all survived that horrifying night.

We all felt a sense of relief. We would never have to deal with another one of these Creatures. I was very wrong.

On the Night of the 21st I heard my teammate say “Is it true” as she was making her way to the bathroom. I was very intrigued by this, and decided to follow her. In the bathroom I found several other teammates with their phones out freaking out. I looked closely, and what I saw was the harriest, largest spider I’ve ever seen. It was a Tarantula! One of the girls started to call Osman JR in to save us.

He ran in very smiley (as usual) looked at the spider laughed, and immediately squashed it with his shoe! WHAT!! HOW!! No fear. None.

Ive learned this week that I am not brave when it comes to gross critters. Osman and Pastor David really like to tease us about our fear of the Bugs.

  • I sadly could not get the videos of the Scorpion attack to upload, so if you’d like to see those just lemme know. Ill send them your way. 🙂
