This is my packing list and some tips for future racers. Keep in mind that this list has changed a lot since my original packing list when I launched. Now, I’m halfway through my race and I have a better idea of what I actually need. This is what is in my pack as of right now, on my race. I’ve dropped a lot, picked up some, and I have oh so much packing wisdom that I’m ready to share. This list is what you will actually need/want. After all I have packed this bag a total of 16 times in 6 months…
My route was – South Africa, Ecuador, Cambodia. My first two countries were pretty normal weather/cold, and my last country is very hot. I brought warmer stuff with me and sent it home at PVT before Cambodia. (If you are going to South Africa, the temperature depends on time of year and location. Research it!)

TIPS & RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PACKING:
- Buy the men’s version of a lot of you gear such as a men’s sleeping pad and a men’s sleeping bag. They are usually bigger/longer but still the same price. This way you can avoid paying extra for the “women’s long” version.
- TENT: You will need a tent for training camp, but you should definitely find a buddy on your team to share a tent with for the race. On gap year, you will not be sleeping in a tent very often, so I definitely recommend sharing with someone so not everyone is carrying 5 extra useless pounds. The tent that Arielle and I used is the REI Half Dome 2 Plus. It’s amazing! 100% recommend.
- Compression packing cubes are the way to go! They save so much space. I have the eagle creek ones (they are linked below)
- If you can, put multiple things inside of your compression sack- example- I have my sleeping bag, 2 jackets and a sweater all in one. It really saves space.
- Don’t bring your nicest camera on the race. There’s a chance it will get stolen, and it will definitely get banged up. Of course I know people who did, and they are fine, so it’s really up to you.
- The Sea to Summit Airporter is the best. It allows you to wear your pack while the airporter is on. If you get the Osprey or the REI one, you will be carrying around your pack like a duffle bag and you will hate it.
- If you are more athletic, I would bring tennis shoes either as a replacement or as an addition to your closed toed shoes. 3-4 pairs is perfect
- DONT try to bring 20 shirts. You don’t need that many. Honestly, you are going to get to your first country and buy a lot of stuff because “it’s so cheap here”.. and then you are gonna drop almost all of it because you have to pack and it doesn’t fit.
- Bring underwear that you normally wear at home. Don’t buy special underwear that you think will be better for the race. Trust me, bring what is normal for YOU
- You don’t need 20 sports bras. You’re probably going to end up wearing the same one for 5 days straight because that’s just how it is.
- Don’t overload on socks. They are going to get lost and you will most likely have to buy new ones in country.. and that’s ok!
- Don’t bring a sarong! They don’t dry you off. You will want either a normal towel, or a Turkish towel! Turkish towels are good, they pack down small and they are absorbent.
- If you wear jewelry at home, definitely bring it!
- Life hack: put your necklaces in a weekly pill holder. You know the ones that have little compartments for every day of the week. It keeps your jewelry organized!
- I’m sure you know this, but don’t bring 9 months worth of toiletries. Almost all countries have Dove, Pantene, and literally all of the American brands that you love.
- If you wear makeup, don’t hesitate to bring it! You’re gonna want it.
- Charles Schwab debit card! These are great because they refund your ATM fees every month. Sometimes they are up to $20 and that’s money that you wouldn’t have gotten back!
- REAL PILLOW. You won’t regret this. Strap it to your day pack during travel. It will be your best friend on planes and buses and airport floors and even in your bed. It’s the best!
- If you don’t want to bring a blanket, snatch one from your first long plane ride. You are gonna want it when you are sleeping on the airport floor for 12 hours and even though it’s 90 degrees, the floor is still somehow freezing cold..
- another blanket tip- On your flight, walk up into business class and grab a blanket from an open seat. They are nicer and I promise no one is judging.
- ear plugs ear plugs ear plugs
- Don’t bring your entire medicine cabinet. Advil and Benadryl will be enough for all of your problems.
- Bring a purse. I brought a crossbody hippie bag. You are going to want a place to put your wallet and phone when you aren’t carrying your day pack. And even when you are traveling, having a purse in front of you is way more convenient than pulling your phone out of your backpack every time you need it!
- On flights, put your necessities in your purse (phone, wallet, headphones, charger) and slide it under your seat. This way you can put your day pack in the overhead and it will be out of the way.
- The biggest thing that I wish I had brought with me is a jean jacket
- I’ve never been asked to wear a skirt before. I brought one because I wear them at home.
- don’t bring a bowl or cutlery, chances are you won’t need it
- I brought my eno hammock and will be sending it home. I’ve used it one time due to lack of opportunities. A lot of other people have them tho.
