I’m currently in Swaziland month 2 and loving every minute of it. It has occurred to me that many people have never even known that Swaziland exists. I remember before leaving for the World Race, telling people that I was going to Swaziland and them saying, “that’s a real place?” Indeed it is, and it truly has my heart. So if you are one of those people who is still confused on where I am, here are some facts about Swaziland:
- Swaziland is also known as the Kingdom of Eswatini
- Swaziland is roughly the size of Rhode Island
- Swaziland is a monarchy with a king who has over 50 wives and over 1000 grandchildren
- Swazis shake hands by also putting your left hand under your right arm in order to show that all your attention is given to them
- Their public transportation are known as kumbis, it costs 20 cents to ride and you never know when the kumbi with show up to the kumbi stops.
Now that I have told you some facts about Swaziland, let me tell you why I love it.
- The mountains here look like a green screen, they are so beautiful
- Kumbi rides always result in meeting a new friend
- Swazi church services include dancing around and saying hello to everyone around the church
- I get to work at an after school day program (our carepoint is another way you will hear me refer to it as)
- At the after school program I get to play with children as young as a year old all the way up to 24 year olds.
- The people here love and want to talk to you
- Their generosity is larger than the mountains
- I can see God in the people I talk to here
I came to Swaziland to tell people the good news of Jesus our Lord and Savior and to get the chance to make a difference in people’s lives. I didn’t realize that the people here would be making the biggest difference in my life. God is working in Swaziland, not just through me, but through the Swazis, my squad mates and squad leaders.
