With high school coming to a close and graduation approaching quickly, I keep getting the question “are you excited?!” Meaning, am I excited to finish school, and more importantly, to go on this mission trip? And the answer is, of course, YES! This is going to be the adventure of a lifetime! But within all of this excitement, I’ve decided to pause and remember the reason for everything. Why am I doing this? Well, here’s a little list:
- It’s the great commission! Matthew 28:19 says to do this.
- I want to be part of something greater than myself. I want to learn what it’s truly like to put the needs of others before my own.
- To grow my faith through experience– to see God in a new way. To let Him out of the box I’ve put him in here at home.
- To be the hands and feet of Jesus. To love & serve & love some more.
- To live in a community of other wonderful people who share the same mission mindset as me (and it turns out we have a lot more in common. Shoutout to Squad A for already being amazing!)
But at the end of the day, something I keep telling myself is why wouldn’t I do this? I’d be crazy not to! There is absolutely no reason for me to rush through college, or skip onto the next thing in life, if I have this amazing opportunity right in front of me. I think that simply having the desire (and the gut) to do the World Race is a good enough reason for me to follow through with it. And I have a feeling that when it’s all said and done, this mission trip is going to be far more than I ever expected.
If not me, then who? And if not now, then when?
Note to self on days the race is tough: If you want to be home, or miss your queen size bed and closet full of clothes, or feel exhausted, or question what you’ve gotten yourself into, REMEMBER why you’re doing this. It’s not about you, it’s about Jesus. And it’s about the Kingdom of God.
