When I started telling my closest friends and family about the possibility of doing the World Race, there was one thing in particular everyone wanted to know.
“How on earth are you going to raise $19,200?”
Well, I’m not.
God is.
In 100% vulnerability I have to tell you that that number terrifies me. And in that fear, the Lord has already taught me so much.
After committing to The Race, I started getting more and more anxious about the fundraising. The more anxious I get, the more the Lord reminds me that He is Jehovah Jireh. The Lord who provides.
In Genesis 22, the Lord tells Abraham to take his son Isaac to a mountain in Moriah and sacrifice him as a burnt offering.
Verses 9-14 of the chapter say:
“When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!”
“Here I am,” he replied.
“Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”
Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, ‘On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.’”
Abraham’s son Isaac is the same son that Abraham and his wife, Sarah, had prayed for for years. He was the son the Lord had graced them with. He was their everything. Their entire life.
When Abraham was ready to give up Isaac to the Lord, the Isaac that was his everything, his life, the Lord provided.
And I know He will do the same for me.
In His time, He will provide.
As I leave behind what my life, my everything currently look like, He will make a way. He will be my Jehovah Jireh. My God who provides.
All over scripture, the Lord makes it clear that He makes a way for Christians to spread the gospel through the generosity of the body of Christ.
In Galatians, Paul instructs the body of Christ to support the teachers of faith (Galatians 6:6). In Philippians 4:10-20, Paul thanks the church at Philippi for supporting his own work in spreading the gospel. In Romans, Paul sought aide for his own missions work and for financial support of Phoebe’s (Romans 15:20-24; 16:1-2).
In the Old Testament, David presented his vision for building a temple to the people and they joyously responded with their time, talents, and treasures (1 Chronicles 28:1-29:20). When God called for Nehemiah to rebuild the walls around Jerusalem, God gave him favor with the Persian king to pay for it (Nehemiah 2).
And those are just a few examples.
With these things in mind, it is with a humble heart that I ask for you to prayerfully consider being a financial supporter of the World Race journey the Lord is taking me on.
