As an ode to my 23rd year, I thought I’d continue this little series with the things I’ve learned, big, small and cultural though my journeys through each country.

  1. The capital city of Astana was renamed “Nur-Sultan” back in March in honor of their recent president.

  2. If you are not dressed in the appropriate attire for the weather, don’t worry, people on the street will let you know by yelling at you in Russian and tugging at your light but warm sweatshirt.

  3. Quick Russian lesson, if you’d like to say “Hello” simply say “Does your ass fit ya” very quickly.

  4. God puts such cool people in my community who know me well enough to know when something wrong with me, sometimes before I even realize it. (@ Hailey and Jordan)

  5. Claiming victory in Jesus name is a daily act

  6. Ice skating is hard, but it’s really amazing to have someone come along side you and literally hold your hand the whole time (my new friend Ayana is truly a picture of Jesus) .

  7. The greatest growth doesn’t come from falling but what you learn as you get back up.

  8. Investing in people is greater than your own agenda

  9.  In Kazakhstan, hospitality is more than entertaining, it’s serving even when you may not have enough yourself.

  10. Plove is my favorite national dish. If you ever get the chance to try it, do it.

  11. Bed bugs are of the devil.

  12. If you’re a lover of Hardee’s (or Carl’s Jr., depending on which side of the country you’re on) you’ll LOVE Kazaks, they too are lovers of the great star.

  13. Kazaks value of hospitality is equivalent Americans value of integrity

  14. There’s an overabundance of Mayo on everything

  15. The city of Astana was built to look super futuristic, if you’ve ever seen the movie “Meet the Robinsons” it looks like that city.

  16. Live orchestras does something good to the soul

  17. Even though people have a hard exterior on the streets all it takes is a simple “doesyourassfitya” – Hello to unleash the overwhelming kindness.

  18. Jordan is kind and when you lose a bet and have to jump into the literally freezing (30 degree night) cold river, she has mercy and says you only have to put your feet in.

  19. I LOVE WATCHING FOOTBALL (soccer) GAMES.

  20. Never underestimate the joy a really good playground can give 3 20-something year olds.

  21. Never pass up a walk along the river

  22. There are people fighting to share the gospel in the most unlikely places

  23. Kaysha and I can really kill some Halloween decorations.

See ya in Kyrgyzstan!
