why did the chicken cross the road?

well, the world race has taught me a lot of things, but not that.

the one thing i do know is that while my team and i sat at our usual bus stop, we definitely did not expect to see an actual real life chicken cross an actual real life road. sure, we’ve seen a lot of “unusual” things throughout the past three months: men holding machetes, woman balancing baskets on their heads, young boys riding a horse loaded with wood- pretty typical and looked at without a second thought. but somehow one of the most “usual” scenarios is what stood out the most to me and my team. a cow crosses a road without a peep from us but the second a chicken even sets a claw out on the dark pavement, we freak.

why?

honestly, i’m not sure.

maybe it’s because a simple, hypothetical, childhood idea turned joke was finally realized.

a question frequently told,

a joke buried six feet under by its own repetition,

and a scenario mostly seen through imagination.

something i never desired to look for,

never expected to see,

and never even thought of as reality suddenly stood, or should i say, crossed, the road right in front of me.

it was almost like a childhood dream we never knew we still treasured suddenly resurfaced with effortless, elementary joy.

and the best part?

that’s a life lived with God.

choosing to abide in my Heavenly Father’s throne room has shown me that even crazy childhood fantasies are not too big for Him.

He’s constantly left me in awe of His ability to provide abundantly more than even my four year old self could ever desire to look for, expect to see, or even dream of as potential reality.

His grace is so good that everyday i wake up, i have the opportunity to walk with Him, see Him move, and watch all the chickens cross all the roads as strangers and strange places instantly become the setting for an award winning movie the second i say yes to the promptings of the Spirit.

and the coolest part is, moments like that don’t have to be some rare occasion because He desires greater things for us than we desire for ourselves. He loves to blow us away and surpass our four-year-old imaginations.

so although i may never know the mystery of why the chicken actually decided to cross the road, i do know that God is on the move and because of that i can embrace the mystery of the future with childlike expectancy.

He’s the perfect protector of my dreams and if surrender is what it takes to watch a chicken cross a road time and time again, then i’m all for it.
