“Are you willing to take the lowest position in the room?” That is a question I feel like God keeps asking me over and over. I wish I could just jump up and say, “Yes, absolutely Lord!” But the truth is, it is really hard for me to say that I am willing to do that since my actions and especially my thoughts tell otherwise. See the thing is, because of the pride in me I want to be recognized for the things that I do and want praise and affirmation from people. The truth is, I do not need a single human to notice anything that I do. If I cannot serve God and honor Him in the small things when no one else is watching or noticing, then I cannot say that I serve God.

You might be wondering what that means to take the lowest position, well I think that might look different for everyone.  Here are some examples of what it means to me. It might just simply mean to keep my mouth shut when I want to correct someone or crack a joke at a bad time, listen to someone rather than tune them out or avoid conversation, talk way less and listen far more. It may mean loving people when they don’t even notice and if someone else gets credit for something I feel like should have been me, I can celebrate for the other person and move on. Yes recognition is nice and I think we should be quick to give that out but seeking it from others shouldn’t be our only motivation. If it is then we are building the wrong kingdom. We need to remember who’s kingdom we are building and it should not be our own.

God is so awesome and mighty that He really can’t be made higher, He already is the highest of heights. The only thing we can do is to make ourselves lower, to get on our knees and to take the back seat. The person we are in the light should be the same one we are behind the scenes and if they don’t line up, we have to be real about it. He doesn’t want an act, he wants our true hearts and his applause is the only one we need because it‘s the only one that truly matters.

Taking the lowest position means dying to yourself daily in order for Christ to come alive in you.

In God’s kingdom (which is the one we all live in) the king willingly CHOSE to take the lowest position in the room so that we could come alive. When we focus our attention on Christ and seek for him to be the one glorified, we take the focus off ourselves. This is how we truly come alive. We will never fully get this this side of heaven but until then we can continue to ask ourselves.

“Are you willing to take the lowest position in the room?”
