Hearing the Lord’s voice and seeking Him at times can be frustrating and confusing. This season of your relationship with the Lord, the enemy will attack you with doubt. You will think, “there’s no way that’s the Lord. if there is a God out there, why would He want to talk to little me?” Those are some lies i had to overcome. Disregard those LIES, and press on. The only way i could do this, was to keep pushing on and seeking the Lord. It is so important to have someone to walk through this with you: something as eager as you, who you can share doubt with. It is also important to have someone full of the Holy Spirit and more mature in the Spirit, to guide you and help you distinguish lies of satan to the truth of the Lord. In the Bible, the Lord says “when you seek me, you will find me.” That is a promise of His, so do not lose hope! You WILL find Him because of Jesus.
Some of you may know, that one of my special things with the Lord is butterflies! In cambodia month 1 of the race, one of my leaders recommended asking the Lord for a thing to be your special thing with Him. I asked and prayed and wasn’t really sure. This is when i started seeing butterflies everywhere. They would be in the most random places: on sidewalks, appearing in the house, on people clothes, on plates in homes, everywhere. It was so beautiful because everytime i would see one, it was a small reminder that the Lord was with me and listening to me. So I suggest, ask God to highlight something special for you and Him! Whatever it is, it’s a gift and something extra to remind you that God is with you. If you don’t see this thing, that does not mean God isn’t with you. When you do see your thing, it’s a special gift. God will show up.
Get in a quiet place, free from distraction, and play instrumental music if it will help focus you. Start off simple. Ask out loud or in your head, God what do you say about me? Write down anything that pops into your mind. You may immediately think you made it up, but just write it down anyways. In 1 Kings 19: 11-13, the Lord led Elijah to a mountain. Mighty wind and earthquakes shook the mountain. Then all of a sudden, Elijah heard a “quiet, whispering voice.” This story demonstrates that the voice of the Lord is not often what we expect, a booming deep Morgan Freeman type of voice, it’s small and can be what seems like thoughts in our mind. Everything good and pure on this Earth is from the Lord. if an image or thought of an object comes to your mind, write it down. Just do it! It may seem weird, but you have nothing to lose. BUT you have everything to gain!!!! Knowing the love the Heavenly Father has for you is the best gift in the whole world. Keep doing this everyday. Philippians 5:6-8 says to “not worry but to say thank you in all your prayers because God will give you His peace, which will protect your thoughts and emotions. Keep your thoughts on things that are true and pure, and God’s peace will surround you.” i believe, as you seek out the Lord to talk to Him, He will give you a feeling of peace, joy, and excitement that will be hard for you to explain, and you will remember reading this and know you are experiencing the love of the Father.
This is how i started hearing the Lord’s voice 9 months ago. It was so strange at first, and i thought i was making everything up. There are no coincidences with God. once you start seeing things come together randomly and out of nowhere, remember to thank God, and He will bless you with more and more understanding of what’s happening.
There are some ways you can check if what you are hearing is truly from the Lord. One, does it line up with scripture? Can you find some scripture in the Bible to back up what you are hearing? Two, does it match God’s character? If you think you hear God say, i hate your sister’s boyfriend, that is not in the Lord’s character. He would not say that. Third, can it be confirmed by other believers? When talking to other believers, have they experienced what you are saying? Have they seen what you heard? And Fourth, did it come to pass? If you think you heard an event or you saw an image of something, pray into what you saw and heard and see if it actually happens in real life. If what you are sensing matches these 4 things, you ARE hearing Abba.
After speaking to the Lord intimately for these last nine months, i often wonder how i got through life this far without knowing how to talk to my Father. The reason is: the Lord has favor on my life and has chosen me, and He has chosen YOU too! He desires nothing more than to love you, and He has this whole time. I will be praying Ephesians 1:18-19 and Ephesians 3:16-18 over everyone who reads this blog. I have an image of you on your computer or phone reading this, and Jesus sitting next to with His glowing hand over your eyes and ears. I believe He is opening them in this moment to receive and believe whatever He is saying to you, His beloved child.
