Common Questions

As I’ve been posting and telling people about the World Race and what I will be doing in the year that I’ll be gone, I’ve gotten a lot of questions. So, I’m going to try to answer questions I’ve gotten from others and questions I had myself in this blog post.

Q: What is The World Race?

A: The World Race is part of an organization called Adventures in Missions (AIM). AIM also has gap year trips for people ages 18 – 21 for 9 months. I will be doing the World Race 11in11 program. This means I’ll be leaving in August for 11 months and will be going to a different country each month, so 11 countries in 11 months.

Q: Where are you going?

A: I will be going to Chile, Peru, Columbia, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. I don’t know yet where specifically I’ll be in each country: wherever AIM and the Lord thinks is best!

Q: What will you be doing?

A: I could be doing a whole bunch of different things. It really depends on the country, the need, and the host families I’ll be staying with. I’ve read lots of previous racers’ blogs and they’ve done things like teach English to kids, paint an entire church, construction work, work in an orphanage, spend time with the elderly, preach anywhere and everywhere, just really whatever the need is in that community!

Q: Where will you be staying?

A: I will mostly be staying with host families but that doesn’t mean I’ll be in houses the entire time. One month I might be in a house, the other I may be sleeping in a tent for a month!

Q: Who will you be traveling with?

A: I have a squad of about 32 people who I will be going to training camp with and who I will be traveling with. The squad will be broken down into smaller teams, and I will most likely be with this team the entire 11 months. So, while my entire team will be in the same country together, one team could be working in an orphanage in Kenya while another team us building a church in Kenya.

Q: What is training camp?

A: Training camp is where I will meet my squad and will get the information and training I need to be the best World Racer I can be. It’s in Georgia for 10 days in June, and I’ll be doing a lot of hiking and sleeping outside (please pray for me!).

Q: How much do you have to raise?

A: $18,600! I know it’s a lot of money but the majority of it will go towards travel, food, and housing while I’m gone.

Q: Are you nervous?

A: Yes and no. I think right now it’s still so new and I’m too excited to be nervous! Whenever I start to feel a little nervous about it, I make sure to give my worries to God and remember my favorite verse, Psalm 69:1 – “Save me Oh Father for the waters have come up to my neck.”  I know that I will be tested this next year and I will be way out of my comfort zone, but I also know that God never gives us more than we can handle. I’m so excited to grow more in Him and for Him to use me to share His love and faithfulness with others.
